Twenty minutes later, Ethan and Isabella made their way back home.
The villa was never meant for Isabella. Ethan had bought it for Natalie, but after failing to tell her how he felt, he couldn’t let anyone know the truth. If Isabella hadn’t spent two lifetimes as his wife, she would have never guessed either.
They had lived here ever since they got married. In her last life, Isabella thought this place would be her forever home, the place where she and Ethan would grow old together. Three years later, she ended up divorced and packing her bags.
This time around, she barely spent any time at home. She tried not to let herself get too attached.
“Isabella.” Susan greeted her with a big, warm smile.
“Have you eaten yet, Isabella?”
“I did, Susan. I ate at my mom’s house.”
“Oh, then I’ll make you some nourishing soup tomorrow morning. You need to take care of yourself.”
Isabella smiled. “Really, Susan, I’m fine. You don’t need to worry so much.”
“How can you say it’s nothing? You scared us all half to death. You were out for more than ten hours. Ethan was worried sick. Now that you’re home from the hospital, you have to rest and eat well. What do you want for breakfast tomorrow? I’ll make it for you.”
“I’m not picky, Susan. I’ll eat whatever you make.”
Susan looked like she wanted to say more, but when Ethan shot her a look, she caught on fast. “Alright, I’ll leave you two to talk.” She disappeared into another room.
Now it was just Ethan and Isabella, the air thick between them.
“I never wanted to get divorced. It was wrong to trick you into marrying me, and I never should have used you. But once I decided to marry you, I meant it. I wanted to spend my life with you.”
“Isabella, please, just give me one more chance. I’m begging you.”
“Ethan, what’s the point of all this?” Isabella stood up, looking him in the eye. “There’s just no point anymore, don’t you see? We can’t keep pretending, not even as husband and wife in name only.”
“I don’t love you anymore. I don’t want you.”
She took a breath. “Ethan, I’m the one who doesn’t love you. I don’t want to be with you, not now, not ever again. So whatever you say, it doesn’t matter.”
“We’ve had this conversation so many times. You’re tired of saying it, I’m tired of hearing it. Let’s just part ways, peacefully.”
