Ethan glared at her, his mood stormy. After a long pause, he finally relaxed his expression a little. “Isabella Lane, I admit I’ve done you wrong. But like I said, the title of Mrs. Adams is yours, and I’ll show you the respect that comes with it.”
“You’ll never lack for anything material. The wedding gifts are already in your name. I’ll give you thirty thousand a month for spending. What more do you want?” He looked at her, his tone clipped. “The only thing I won’t give you is my love. Anything else, as long as it’s reasonable, I’ll give you.”
Isabella pulled her hand out of his with a sharp, decisive motion.
Ethan’s eyes flickered in disbelief. She had actually shaken off his hand. This was the woman who used to love him so much. Back then, all he had to do was pretend to care, chase after her for a few months, and she’d fallen for him completely. Around him, she’d always been gentle and sweet, never arguing.
What was with her today? It was like she’d woken up a different person.
“Mr. Adams.” Isabella’s lips curled into a half-smile. “You’re rushing me out of the house so early because you can’t wait to see your unrequited love, right?”
“You want to know if she’ll get jealous now that you’ve married me.”
She looked at him, her voice teasing. “Am I wrong? If you want me to play along, don’t you think you owe me something in return?”
Ethan stared at her, stunned. “You want compensation? I’m taking you to visit your own family and you’re asking for money?”
“Today is my day to visit my family, but I told you I didn’t want to leave so early. You’re the one insisting. That means I’m doing you a favor. If I’m doing you a favor, you should pay me.” She stuck out her hand. “I’m not picky. Ten or twenty thousand is fine. If you want to give me a few million, I won’t complain. The more, the better.”
“I’m broke now. Seriously, I have nothing,” Isabella said, her tone flat.
Ethan frowned. “Didn’t your mom save anything for you?” He was thinking about all the cash he’d included with the wedding gifts.
“In The Lane Family, my mom’s always had to watch what she says and does. She doesn’t get a say in anything. You know that, Mr. Adams. You’ve known us long enough.”
Ethan went quiet. After a long silence, he finally said, “Fine. Ten thousand. Be ready to leave in ten minutes. Natalie is waiting. Don’t keep her waiting.”
“Alright. Send me the money, and I’ll be ready in ten,” Isabella replied, her voice light and easy.
