After a moment, Harold spoke up again. “Besides, Ethan and I aren’t enemies. There’s no real bad blood between us. We both work in the same field, so it’s not like we can avoid each other.”
“Things won’t ever get too tense. What matters is that, no matter who you choose, we both want you to be happy. I’ve told you before, if you pick me, I’ll make sure everyone envies the life you have.”
“If you choose Ethan, I’ll wish you both the best. When you really love someone, all you want is for them to be happy, even if that happiness isn’t with you.”
Isabella wanted to say something, but she couldn’t find the words.
Harold knew Ethan well, and Ethan understood Harold just as much.
It was true, Ethan had mentioned a few times that Harold wasn’t exactly a saint, but he never got into specifics. Harold would occasionally throw a jab at Ethan, usually about his lingering feelings for Natalie, which was fair enough.
These two weren’t like most rivals, always looking for a fight whenever they met.
Like Harold said, they both just wanted the best for Isabella.
“Harold, let’s eat. You should have some food too, not just keep piling it on my plate,” Isabella said, steering the conversation away from romance.
Harold picked up on her mood and switched gears without missing a beat. They ate and chatted, the atmosphere easy and comfortable.
Isabella had to admit, being around Harold felt a little more relaxed than being with Ethan. Harold respected her, gave her space. Ethan, on the other hand, always seemed to want things his way.
Still, she couldn’t bring herself to say yes to Harold. She knew she didn’t love him, not really.
After lunch, Harold drove her back to the office. He stopped by for a glass of water and left soon after, not wanting to cut into her break. He said he needed to get some rest himself back at his company.
