Isabella had no clue what her nemesis was up to these days. Around noon, she grabbed lunch with Linda, and after they finished eating, the two of them lingered at the table, chatting and laughing before heading back to their own offices.
Linda always took a half-hour nap in her office break room during lunch. It was the only way she could handle the heavy workload that came with the afternoons. Isabella, on the other hand, just closed her eyes for a bit on the long sofa in her own reception area. Her office wasn’t nearly as big as those fancy executive suites, no private lounge or anything like that. Even the kitchenette was ridiculously tiny.
Since Linda had invited her out, Isabella didn’t make it home for lunch with her mom. She had to promise she’d definitely be back for dinner. No work events, no dropping by the shop, just a quiet night at home, spending time with her mother. It had been way too long since the two of them had a real conversation.
Around two in the afternoon, Isabella’s secretary came in to announce an unexpected visitor. Samantha had arrived. Isabella got up right away, hurrying out to greet her.
“Isabella, I hope I’m not bothering you,” Samantha said, her tone apologetic.
“Of course not. You’re welcome here anytime,” Isabella replied, smiling.
She led Samantha into her office and offered her a seat. When she asked if Samantha wanted something to drink, Samantha just asked for a glass of warm water. Isabella poured it for her, then made herself a coffee. She used to get by with just one cup in the morning, which kept her wired all day and sometimes even ruined her sleep at night. Now, though, it felt like the caffeine barely worked anymore. Maybe she’d just built up too much tolerance. These days, she needed at least two cups to make it through to the end of the workday.
Once they were both settled, Isabella looked over at Samantha, waiting for her to explain why she’d come.
Samantha smiled. “You don’t have to be so nervous. I’m not here to make things difficult for you.”
