An hour later, Isabella and Nana stepped out of the police station together. They’d just finished giving their statements.

Beforehand, Isabella had recorded every ridiculous demand the George family made. When she played the recording in front of the officers, everyone turned to stare at the family, and you could see the panic on their faces.

The scene where they’d cornered Isabella was impossible to explain away. No matter how much they tried to defend themselves, nobody bought it.

If they wanted her to pitch in for medical expenses, she’d pay only what others did—maybe nothing at all. Morally, she owed them nothing, not after how they’d treated her.

They’d even tried to sell her off when she was a child. No one sided with Berenice. Not one person thought she was in the right.

By the time Isabella and Nana walked out, the George family was still inside, stuck listening to another round of lectures from the police.
