Elle’s POV

Sophia raised an eyebrow, that knowing smirk playing at her lips. “How rare! Why wouldn’t I be here? Didn’t Brad tell you that he’s been allies with our Frostclaw Pack’s Alpha Lester and Moonlake Pack’s Roy for years?”

I felt heat creep up my cheeks. “I… honestly had no idea about any of that.”

“I mean, seriously,” Sophia continued, her tone somewhere between amused and exasperated, “what exactly do you know about werewolf social circles? The entire North American Pack Alliance knows about these relationships, and you’re completely clueless?”

“I really don’t know,” I admitted, feeling slightly embarrassed. God, sometimes it felt like I was navigating this werewolf world completely

blind.

Sophia waved her hand dismissively. “Whatever. I guess someone who just got pulled in from human communities into being an Alpha’s mate wouldn’t understand the struggles of us mixed-blood werewolves.”

Alpha’s mate… mixed-blood werewolves… I thought to myself. Sophia, do you have any idea which one of us is in the more awkward position

here?

She linked her arm through mine in that casual way that suggested we were old friends. “I was supposed to fly here with you guys on the private jet, but you know what? Lester wouldn’t have it. He insisted I drive here to ‘demonstrate Frostclaw Pack’s independence!”” She threw her hands up dramatically. “The suffering! Have you ever seen a Beta werewolf forced to play diplomat? That’s me! So much

suffering!”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “You’re ridiculous.”

“But seriously,” Sophia said, pointing across the room, “that Alpha Lester with his weird principles is definitely something else!”

I followed her gaze and saw a man standing near the far wall. He was… unexpected. Where most Alphas I’d encountered were built like linebackers, this man was lean and refined, with an almost aristocratic bearing. His features were delicate, almost beautiful, but there was an undeniable power radiating from him that made people instinctively step aside.

As if sensing my attention, he turned toward us. Silver-gray eyes met mine across the room, intelligent and assessing. He smiled and

nodded politely in my direction.

I smiled back and gave a small nod of acknowledgment. I never would have guessed that the Frostclaw Pack’s Alpha would be someone who looks so… un-Alpha-like.

“See?” Sophia said, noticing the exchange. “You think Alpha Lester’s a bit domineering too, right?”

“Domineering how?” I asked, curious despite myself.

“I’m the Beta of Frostclaw Pack, for crying out loud! So why do I have to pretend to be his date at every diplomatic function? I’m a Beta! I could bring my own mate if I wanted to!” She gestured emphatically. “Do you have any idea how frustrating that is?”

I watched Lester across the room, noting how he and Brad seemed to share some kind of understanding. There were clearly pack dynamics

at play here that I didn’t fully grasp.

“Your Alpha really is different from what I expected,” I commented.

“What do you mean?” Sophia asked, confused.

I grinned mischievously. “If you both shifted during a full moon, would his wolf form be smaller than yours too?”

Sophia’s eyes widened as she caught my meaning, then she playfully tapped my cheek. “Hey! Look who’s getting smart about werewolf

stuff!”

That explained the connection with Brad. I looked across the room where Lester stood with Brad and Roy. The three of them created quite a picture – three very different Alphas, each commanding attention in their own way. Even the humans in attendance seemed to

unconsciously give them a wide berth.

That’s when I heard it.

A soft, surprised voice drifted across the space: “You’re all here… Lester! Brad… you came too…”

I felt Brad’s reaction before I saw it. His entire body went rigid, his fingers curling into fists.

A subtle werewolf scent hit me then, different from the others I’d grown accustomed to. I turned to see a tall, willowy woman approaching in a flowing white dress that seemed to float around her like mist. The wind from the open terrace doors caught her long hair and the delicate fabric, creating an almost ethereal effect.

Every human in the vicinity immediately looked down, that instinctive submission kicking in. Even some of the lower-ranking werewolves stepped aside respectfully. But my eyes were fixed on Brad.

I watched his face transform as he looked at her. There was recognition there, and something deeper. Something that made my stomach

clench with an emotion I didn’t want to name.

Sophia stood frozen beside me, staring at the newcomer. “When did a random female werewolf get to join gatherings of the three major Pack Alphas?” she murmured, more to herself than to me. “Or… were they already acquainted?”

Roy frowned slightly as the woman approached, “Mira…” he said, and I could hear the question in his voice. What are you doing here?

Lester was more welcoming than Roy, but I caught the wariness in his eyes. “Mira, you’re back.”

But Mira’s attention was entirely focused on Brad. “Brad,” she said softly, “I’m back.”

Brad lifted his eyes to meet hers, and my heart sank at what I saw there. Recognition. History. A connection I could never hope to

understand or compete with.

Lester smoothly guided Roy away, giving Brad and Mira privacy.

Meanwhile, Mira stepped closer to Brad, her voice dropping to that intimate tone reserved for lovers. ‘Brad, why are you looking at me like that? Have I been away so long that you’ve forgotten my scent?”

“No,’ Brad replied without hesitation, his voice rough with emotion. “I could never forget your scent.*

The words hit me like a physical blow. I watched Mira’s face light up with joy, a blush spreading across her cheeks as she smiled up at him

with obvious adoration.

I stood there, watching this reunion unfold, and felt something inside me break. Even though I couldn’t sense their pheromone exchange the way other werewolves could, I didn’t need supernatural senses to understand what I was seeing.

“Hey.” Sophia’s voice cut through my spiraling thoughts. She squeezed my hand gently. “Don’t panic. Whatever history that female wolf

has with Brad, you’re the one carrying his child.”

I managed a bitter laugh. “Sophia, I’m getting tired. Could you help me find somewhere to rest?

Sophia studied my face for a moment, then glanced back at Brad and Mira. I caught the exact moment she understood what was happening. “Of course,” she said quietly, wrapping a supportive arm around me.

As we turned to leave, I felt Brad’s gaze on me that peripheral awareness that told me he was watching even while engaged with

someone else. But I couldn’t bring myself to look back.

The moment we were out of sight, the carefully constructed walls I’d built around my emotions came crashing down. The darkness I’d been holding back flooded through me, and I couldn’t hide it anymore.
