After One Night with the Alpha (Brad and Elle) novel Chapter 121

Chapter 121

Brad’s POV

“Get me? Where to?” Her voice was cautious, distant.

“I haven’t eaten yet,” I said, cutting straight to the point. “have dinner with me.”

There was a pause, and I could practically hear her internal struggle.

“Okay,” she said softly. “I’ll send you the address.”

Relief flooded through me so intensely that my wolf practically howled with satisfaction. “Good. I’ll pick you up in thirty minutes.”

I hung up and immediately headed for my black Lamborghini, my mood lifting for the first time all day.

My phone buzzed.

Mira’s name flashed on the screen.

My jaw clenched automatically. After everything that had happened today, the last thing I wanted was to deal with more complications.

But something made me answer.

“Brad…” Her voice came through soft and breathless, with that familiar melodic quality that used to make my heart race. Now it just made me wary. “I’m really sorry to bother you.”

“What is it, Mira?” I kept my voice neutral, professional.

*I…” She paused, and I could hear genuine distress creeping into her tone. “I’m not feeling well…”

“Can’t you call someone else?” I asked, already knowing the answer but hoping anyway.

“There’s no one else,” she said, and then I heard it a soft, pained moan followed by what sounded like something crashing to the floor. The werewolf in me immediately went on alert at the sound of distress. “Brad, I… I think I’m really in trouble here.”

Fuck. My hands tightened on the steering wheel as memories flooded back

Elle, I couldn’t leave her suffering.

“Brad?” Mira’s voice came again, weaker now. “I’m sorry for asking, but I wouldn’t if I had any other choice.”

I closed my eyes briefly. Elle would understand, wouldn’t she?

“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.” I said, already making a U-turn.

“Thank you,” she breathed, relief evident in her voice. “Thank you so much, Brad.”

“Mira?” I called out as I pushed the door open cautiously.

The sight that greeted me made my heart stop. Mira was lying motionless on the floor, dressed in a flowing white gown that made her look ethereal and fragile. Her usually vibrant presence was completely still, and I could barely detect her breathing.

Without thinking, I rushed to her side, gathering her into my arms. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and when I lifted her onto the

couch, she felt far too light.

“Mira, can you hear me?” My Alpha voice came out automatically, commanding but concerned.

Her eyes fluttered open slowly, unfocused and glassy. “Brad?” she whispered weakly. “You… you came.”

“Of course I came,” I said. “It’s happening again?”

“Yeah,” she murmured, trying to sit up but failing. “I just suddenly felt so weak. And there’s this pain…” She gestured vaguely at her

abdomen.

I was already reaching for my keys. “I’ll take you to the medical center right now.”

But her hand caught my wrist.

“Brad,” she said, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. “before you came, I couldn’t even stand up. Now that you’re here, I already feel stronger. Don’t you remember? Your Alpha presence always helped me heal faster.”

Damn it. She wasn’t wrong.

I glanced at my watch and felt my stomach drop.

“Thank you,” she whispered against my shoulder. “I knew you wouldn’t abandon me when I needed you.”

‘I’m still so dizzy. Could you help me get ready?”

I nodded, already standing. “Of course. What do you need?”

“There’s a bag in my bedroom with my medications,” she said, still leaning heavily against the couch. And maybe you could help me to the car? I don’t think I can walk on my own yet.”

As I headed toward her bedroom to get the bag, I heard a splash and a gasp behind me.

“Oh no!” Mira’s voice was filled with genuine distress. “Brad, I’m so sorry!”

I turned to see her holding my phone, water dripping from both the device and her trembling hands. A glass that had apparently been on the side table was now empty and lying on its side.

“I was trying to reach for my tissue box and knocked over my water glass,” she said, tears streaming down her face. “Your phone was right there and it got soaked. I’m so sorry, I tried to dry it off but it won’t turn on.”

I took the phone from her hands, pressing the power button repeatedly. Nothing. The screen remained black.

“Damn,” I muttered, though I tried to keep the frustration out of my voice.

“I’ll buy you a new one,” Mira said immediately, her voice thick with tears. “I promise. I’m so sorry, Brad.”

“It’s fine,” I said, though my wolf was howling in distress. Without my phone, I had no way to contact Elle, no way to explain why I was

taking so long. “Accidents happen.”

But even as I said it, something nagged at the back of my mind. The timing seemed almost too convenient.

“Come on,” I said, pushing the suspicion aside. “Let’s get you to the medical center.”

Inside the medical center, the staff immediately recognized me and rushed to attend to Mira. They set her up in a private room and started running tests, checking her vitals and blood work. I found myself pacing the small waiting area.

“Mr. Rayne?” A nurse appeared. “Ms. Collins is asking for you. She’s been set up for IV fluids and medication, but she seems very anxious

about being alone.”

I followed the nurse back to Mira’s room, where she was lying in the hospital bed with an IV drip attached to her arm. She looked small and vulnerable under the stark medical lighting.

“Brad,’ she said, reaching out her free hand toward me. “Don’t go. Please. I know I’m being selfish, but I’m scared.”

I glanced at my watch.

“Mira, you’re getting the care you need now. Maybe I should-

“Please,” she interrupted, tears welling in her eyes again. “I know I don’t have the right to ask anything of you anymore. But could you just… stay until the IV is finished? The doctor said it would only take about an hour.”

I ran a hand through my hair, feeling torn between competing loyalties. “Can’t you call someone else to sit with you? What about your

friends from Frostclaw Pack?”

“Yara is busy with her mating ceremony preparations,” Mira said quietly. “And Lester is dealing with pack business. There really isn’t anyone else, Brad. I’m more alone than I’ve ever been.”

The admission hit me harder than it should have. Despite everything between us, the thought of her being completely isolated tugged at

something deep in my Alpha nature.

“Just until the IV is done,” I said finally, settling into the chair beside her bed.

Her face lit up with relief and something else I couldn’t quite identify. “Thank you. You have no idea what this means to me.”
