After One Night with the Alpha (Brad and Elle) novel Chapter 65

Chapter 65

Elle’s POV

I watched as Brad gave Raymond that signature half-smile of his, the one that never quite reached his eyes.

Brad once told me, “No matter how complicated things are between us in private, we need to put on a perfect show for others.” I had to admit, I was getting better at this performance art. Pretending to be the adoring mate of an Alpha werewolf in public was becoming second nature, even as our private relationship

grew increasingly complex.

Brad glanced at me, eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief. “Elle’s becoming quite the quick study,” he said, his voice carrying just enough for Raymond to hear. Then he leaned closer to me; his breath warm against

my ear as he whispered, “Aren’t you?”

I forced a sweet smile onto my face, feeling the weight of Raymond’s curious gaze. “I try my best to keep up with you,” I replied, my voice honey-sweet despite the storm brewing inside me.

Brad made a show of concern, his hand sliding possessively around my waist. “Yes, Elle’s carrying our child now, so she can’t join me on the course,” he said to Raymond, his tone casual yet somehow pointed. He reached up and playfully tapped the tip of my nose, a gesture so intimate it made my heart skip despite

myself.

He leaned forward until we were nearly eye-level, his face close enough that I could count his eyelashes.

I felt my breath catch as I stared into those eyes. For a moment, I almost forgot we were putting on a show. His handsome features, framed by that midnight-black hair with hints of silver at the temples, were captivating up close. It took everything in me not to lose my composure.

Flaunting that stupidly perfect face of his. What the hell is he smiling about?

Thank god I hadn’t actually fallen for him. If I had, I’d be completely at his mercy with those looks and that voice. The thought alone was terrifying.

Raymond cleared his throat, clearly unwilling to watch our loving couple routine any longer. “Well, it’s been a while since I’ve played,” he said smoothly. “Today’s perfect for getting back into it.”

I took my cue to step aside, Alex following discreetly behind me as the men prepared for their game. When they were out of earshot, I turned to him.

“Is the proposal ready?” I asked quietly.

Alex nodded respectfully. “Yes, Mrs. Rayne. However, Alpha mentioned that business discussions would wait until after golf. He wants to ensure Mr. Carter is relaxed first.”

I nodded, understanding the strategy. This was how men like Brad operated – building relationships on the golf course before sealing deals in the boardroom. I wasn’t Sophia with her political savvy and social grace.

I knew my limitations.

“I’ll wait here then,” I said, finding a comfortable seat in the shade.

Just then, my phone rang. The screen displayed “Sophia Luke.” I answered with some surprise.

“Hello, Sophia.”

“I heard you’re at the golf club today,” her sultry voice came through immediately, energetic and direct. “We’re here too! My Alpha and I are in Section Two. The men are playing, and I’m bored out of my mind.

Want to join me?”

“You’re here too?” I couldn’t hide my surprise.

“Yes, I’m in Section Two,” she repeated. “My Alpha’s playing with his associates, and I’m dying of boredom. I remembered you’d be here today, and figured Brad probably abandoned you to play golf too. So come find

me!”

“I should probably stay here,” I said hesitantly, worried about what Brad might think if he returned to find

me gone.

“Fine, then I’ll come to you!” Sophia immediately countered. “My Alpha’s entertaining a bunch of old men today. So boring! I told him I didn’t need to come, but he insisted. Typical.”

I smiled despite myself. “As long as your Alpha doesn’t mind, I have no objections.”

Inwardly, I wondered about Brad’s attitude toward my friendship with Sophia. He hadn’t objected to our previous meetings, which suggested he might actually approve of our connection.

Within minutes, I spotted Sophia arriving in one of the club’s electric carts. Even from a distance, her figure in a fitted golf outfit was unmistakable. I couldn help but admire her elegant silhouette – truly a

werewolf Beta in every sense.

As she approached, I noted how everything she wore seemed infused with a wild nobility that was uniquely

hers. Her athletic yet feminine build moved with natura grace that made every women instantly hostile. I understood why even Marissa, with all her model beauty, couldn’t compare to Sophia’s natural allure.

She walked toward me with that signature sway, her slightly husky voice calling, “Elle…” I noticed how the male staff members around us straightened nervously as she passed.

No wonder human women hate them, I thought. This innate charm is what every ordinary woman envies most.

“Would you like something to drink?” I asked, trying to shift focus. “They have French wine that was flown

in at 4 AM this morning.”

Sophia raised an eyebrow. “Brad’s letting you drink while pregnant?”

I laughed. “Of course I’m not allowed. But for you, I could share a glass.”

The server brought over a glass of red wine for Sophia and milk for me. Sophia examined the wine expertly, holding it up to the light before taking a sip.

“Brad really knows how to indulge,” she remarked appreciatively. “This is a favorite among French nobility.”

I nodded calmly. “I heard it costs twenty thousand dollars a bottle.”

I was getting better at maintaining my composure around such extravagance. Brad’s constant spending had desensitized me to these prices.

“Aren’t you worried about just leaving your Alpha?” I asked. “You are the pack Beta after all.”

Sophia waved dismissively. “He’s fine without me. Instead of worrying about me, you should worry more

about yourself.”

“What’s there to worry about for me?” I asked, genuinely confused.

Sophia set down her glass and looked directly at me. “Elle, I don’t like many people, but I like you. So I

consider you a friend. What about you?”

Her directness caught me off guard. I’d never had anyone, especially someone like Sophia, declare friendship so bluntly. I didn’t know how to respond.

Taking my silence as rejection, Sophia placed her glass down and moved to stand. “If you’re not interested, we can pretend I never said anything.”

I quickly reached out, my hand covering hers. “I never said I wasn’t interested!”

Sophia looked at my hand on hers, then at my panicked expression, and burst into laughter.

“What’s so funny?” I asked, confused.

Her eyes sparkled with amusement. “Now I understand why Brad likes you. You really are interesting!”

I felt a bitter smile form internally. Brad liking me? Yeah right. He only cares about the heir I’m carrying. But I kept those thoughts to myself as Sophia continued to smile at me, the beginnings of a genuine friendship

forming between us.
