Louisa felt like she was losing her mind.
This deadly proximity. This unbearable tension. The atmosphere grew increasingly heated.
Her brain seemed to be floating in some detached state. She couldn’t stop thinking about that morning’s
kiss–so gentle, so lingering.
But… no, no.
A sliver of remaining rationality yanked her thoughts back to reality.
She forced a smile and said, “I think whatever happened between you and Ms. Foster… it’s your private
business, isn’t it? You don’t need to explain anything to me.”
Her voice grew progressively quieter. Under his deep, intimidating gaze, she simply couldn’t muster the
courage to speak any louder.
Julian frowned, ready to speak plainly.
Just then, the door beside them suddenly opened.
Sadie’s voice rang out: “Louisa, I heard you come back. Why aren’t you coming in? You have to hear this recording–it’s absolutely mind–blowing! It completely shattered my worldview… Hey, where are you?”
She’d been talking to empty space. When she turned he head, she spotted the two figures by the door.
Wow!
Now this was truly mind–blowing,
Meeting Julian’s cold, dark eyes, Sadie shivered involuntarily. Had she interrupted something?
She was about to say she hadn’t seen anything when Louisa, looking like she’d found a lifeline, quickly
broke free from Julian’s hold and rushed to Sadie’s side
“Whatever you want to tell me, let’s talk inside.” Louisa grabbed her arm and pulled her into the
apartment.
“But isn’t that inappropriate? You and Mr. Tudor seemed like you were-”

“Shut up!” Louisa hissed under her breath.
Sadie closed her mouth.
They stood with their backs against the wall, listening to footsteps outside. Julian was leaving.
Louisa finally exhaled in relief.
Sadie could barely contain her excitement. “What’s going on with you and Mr. Tudor? Are you two…?”
“No. There’s nothing between us. Delete whatever scene you’re imagining from your brain. Don’t think
about it, don’t ask about it, don’t mention it.” Louisa cu her off decisively.
Sadie studied her expression with a knowing smile. “If there’s nothing going on, why are you so nervous?”
Louisa shot her a withering look but said nothing.
Sadie stopped teasing and got straight to the point: “Look, Louisa, you’re not some inexperienced girl. You’ve been married before. Don’t tell me you can’t see that Mr. Tudor is interested in you.”
“It’s precisely because I’ve been married that I understand this better,” Louisa replied. “Even the most brilliant men can have their judgment clouded by physical attraction.
“Especially for someone of Julian’s status–liking someone and marrying them are completely different matters. Mistresses and wives serve different purposes. Men like him can compartmentalize perfectly and
withdraw whenever they want.
“In conclusion, a relationship between us is impossible.
“No, no, no!” Sadie disagreed vehemently. “I know George hurt you deeply, but you can’t generalize like that. From what I’ve seen, Mr. Tudor is an honorable man. He’s nothing like George–he wouldn’t do
something so despicable.”
Louisa shook her head. “If you knew why I came home late tonight, you wouldn’t say that.”
“What do you mean? Where did you two go?” Sadie asked, puzzled.
“A blind date.”
As she said those words, Louisa gave a bitter smile. “Today his mother personally called me to ask me to
tell Mr. Tudor to go on a blind date.”

“So he went on a blind date tonight?” Sadie was shocked.

Louisa nodded. “I’m grateful that his mother is a gentle and dignified woman. She used the blind date to
give me a polite warning. If I don’t take the hint, the next warning won’t be so tactful.”
“How can this be? Didn’t you two just go public this morning?”
“Go public with what?” Louisa laughed hollowly. “What happened this morning was just an accident. I
admit, in that moment, I gave in. But his mother’s call woke me up.
“Maybe he does like me–physically, emotionally, or both. But ultimately, it doesn’t matter which.
“Because the end result will be the same.
“I’ve experienced George’s ‘affection,‘ and I’ve witnessed firsthand how it turned to boredom and infidelity.
“I’ve also endured the contempt and disdain from Hazel and the entire Capulet family.
“So, knowing the outcome will be the same, why would put myself through that again?”
She smiled faintly, painfully.
Sadie’s heart ached for her. Louisa knew everything, her mind as clear as a mirror.
But what a cruel clarity to have.

To love. Yet knowing there could be no happy ending, not daring to love, not being able to love.
This heart–wrenching feeling made even Sadie, an outsider, struggle to breathe.
She said nothing more, but went to the liquor cabinet and took out a bottle of red wine.
Louisa sat down on the sofa by the floor–to–ceiling window.
A moment of heaviness and depression filled the room.
Vaguely, Louisa thought she heard a sigh from outside.
But when she listened carefully, there was nothing.
Perhaps after the emotional roller coaster of a day, she was overstimulated and hallucinating.

Sadie placed the wine and decanter on the coffee table, then fetched two glasses and returned to the living room, sitting across from Louisa.
The wine was ready.
As Sadie poured, she said, “Well, if he wants to go on blind dates, let him. We don’t care. Our Louisa will be
beautiful on her own. To hell with them all.”
Louisa gave a short laugh and took a small sip.
After a brief silence, she said, “Actually, I know Julian is a good person. He’s saved me multiple times, and
his character is beyond reproach.
“But someone of his status can’t choose his own marriage partner. He has responsibilities. How could he
possibly end up with a divorced woman like me?”
“That doesn’t sound like you,” Sadie replied. “When you were with George, you didn’t have all these
concerns. Why are you overthinking everything with Julian?”
