William fell silent for a moment, recalling the last time he’d seen Louisa.

He tried to comfort his wife. “I don’t think she will. Louisa is an extremely smart and perceptive person. When I met her last time, she came right out and said she was a divorced woman. That shows she has self–awareness. Don’t rush into anything yet. Let’s wait and see. If things really get out of hand, then you can go talk to her.”

Adeline was still unhappy. “Why should I be the one to talk to her? Why do I have to be the bad guy? Besides, I already gave her a hint last time. She should’ve understood. I was giving her a way to save face, and yet she’s still seeing Julian… Such delusions.*

Part of her was angry at Louisa’s lack of tact, and part of her was furious at being forced into the role of the person breaking them up. She really didn’t want to be the villain.

Meanwhile, on the drive home, Louisa dozed off in a haze.

When she woke up, she saw a sky full of stars. They were on a mountaintop. The car window was open, and a cool, comfortable natural breeze brushed against her face.

She blinked in confusion, then looked down to find Julian’s suit jacket draped over her.

Turning her head, she met Julian’s gaze.

He smiled at her, his eyes gentle. “Didn’t you say you wanted to see the stars? I brought you here.”

“When did I say that?” Louisa asked.

Louisa turned to look out the window again. The summer night sky was serene. The countless stars were like diamonds, quietly glittering with a cool, mysterious light–like lanterns far removed from the mortal world, tranquil and elegant.

Louisa suddenly remembered a conversation. She had said something like that–it was during their business trip to Sunrise City, on the way to the resort.

She’d completely forgotten about it, but he still remembered.

Her heart softened unexpectedly.

Julian gently stroked her hair and spoke slowly. “Louisa, about the pregnancy–we’ll take preventative measures if we can. But if it really

happens and there’s a baby, let’s keep it. I actually like kids.”

Louisa was stunned by his words. Keep it? He liked kids?

Well, she liked money too. Was he joking?

She said firmly, “There won’t be a baby. Don’t worry.”

Julian turned her body toward him, looking into her eyes. Slowly and seriously, he asked, “But what if there is? What would you do?”

Louisa didn’t hesitate. “Get rid of it.”

Julian’s anger flared. This cold–hearted, ruthless woman.

He kissed her lips fiercely. When he’d had enough, his lips still pressed against hers, he said, “If there’s a baby, you’ll marry me. Do you

dare?”

Louisa was startled at first, then laughed–a carefree, almost careless laugh. “I don’t believe in marriage.”

Besides, marrying him was impossible. Even if he had the ability to change their circumstances, it would only come after countless battles with his parents. A result won by expending all one’s courage–wasn’t that just another form of consuming love itself?

She’d finally escaped the nightmare of the Capulet family. She absolutely refused to walk into danger again.

Julian looked at her beautiful face, so determined and detached. His expression cooled.

Finally, she grabbed his tie and sealed his lips with hers, cutting off all his words.

If they could be together, they’d be together. Physical needs, mutual benefits–that was enough.

If things really fell apart, they’d just cut it off. Why did they need marriage? Why did they need an ending?

Over the next three days, Louisa went to the traditional medicine clinic daily for treatment on her foot.

Julian accompanied her every time. Her foot healed quickly, and soon she could walk normally again.

One evening after work, she and Julian headed home together. The moment they stepped into the elevator, her phone rang.

She pulled out her phone and glanced at it–her father was calling. Her face lit up with joy, and she was about to answer immediately.

But then she turned and saw Julian watching her. His gaze made her skin crawl. She decided not to answer, looking around nervously and pretending nothing was wrong.

Julian helpfully reminded her, “Why aren’t you answering?”

“I’ll call back when I get home,” Louisa said.

“Secret conversation with your dad?” Julian asked pointedly.

Caught, Louisa laughed awkwardly. “Of course not. I’m just worried about the signal

in the elevator.”

The truth was, recently, every time her father called, he brought up introducing her to overhear and get all passive–aggressive about it.
