Chapter 352
Those words stopped Louisa dead in her tracks.
She turned to glare at Julian. Was he being a bit too controlling?
But then she flashed him a brilliant smile, “My dad and I do have secrets, and I’m not telling you.”
With that, she took off running, quickly unlocking her door and darting inside. Just as Julian passed his own door, she waved at him. “Good night, Mr. Tudor.”
Then she quickly shut the door, as if afraid he might barge in the next second.
Julian rarely saw her act so playful. He chuckled and headed to his own place.
Louisa settled on the couch and called her father back.
Brian answered quickly. “Louisa, were you busy just now?”
Louisa smiled. “No, Dad. I was in the elevator, and the signal was bad, so I couldn’t answer.”
Brian didn’t think much of it and got straight to the point. “Here’s the thing–I’m planning to come to Silverlight City tomorrow to see
you. Are you free?”
“Of course! Why wouldn’t I be?” Without hesitation, Louisa added, “What time is your train? I’ll pick you up at the station.”
“You don’t need to,” Brian said. “You’re so busy with work. Just send me your address, and I’ll take a cab over.”
Since Louisa’s divorce and move to Cozy Community, Brian hadn’t visited yet and didn’t know the address.
Louisa sent him her location and asked about his train time.
“I haven’t booked my ticket yet,” Brian said. “I wanted to confirm your schedule first.”
“Then I’ll book it for you, Dad.”
She opened the ticket booking app and scrolled through tomorrow’s train times while chatting with her father. But suddenly, something
felt off.
Usually, when her father came to visit, he’d call several days in advance. This time, he was only calling one day ahead. Something was
wrong.
She immediately asked, “Dad, why the sudden visit? Is something wrong?”
Brian laughed. “What could be wrong? I just haven’t seen my precious daughter in a while. I want to visit you.”
Louisa didn’t press further. They chatted about everyday family matters for a while longer. After booking the ticket, she hung up.
Her mind kept circling back–her father’s visit definitely meant something was up. Her instincts were usually right. But she couldn’t figure out what it could be. She’d just have to wait until tomorrow when he arrived.
She’d booked a 1 PM train, which would get her father to Silverlight City at 3 PM. She could take a half–day off and head to the station early to pick him up.
Just as she’d finished planning everything, Julian called.
Louisa answered casually. “Mr. Tudor.”
The cold formality in her tone irritated him. His voice came back cool and pointed. “Now that Ms. Forbes is done with her secret
conversation with her dad, shouldn’t she share some secrets with her boyfriend?”
Louisa groaned. “What secrets could I possibly have?”
They spent all day together at work, lived next door to each other after hours, and now they were on the phone too. It felt weird.
Having nothing else to say, she volunteered, “I’d like to take tomorrow afternoon off.”
Although technically she didn’t need to tell him–she could just go straight to HR. But wasn’t he her supposed boyfriend? She should probably give him a heads–up to avoid him getting upset later.
Julian wasn’t surprised at all. “Your dad’s coming?”
“Yes.”
Julian didn’t say much more, readily approving her time off.
The next day, Louisa spent the entire morning finishing a full day’s worth of work. At lunchtime, Julian called her to his office to have
lunch together.
At 1:30 PM, she drove to the train station.
After waiting fifteen minutes, Brian emerged from the gate. As expected, his hands were loaded down with bags full of local specialties he’d brought for Louisa.
Louisa immediately rushed over to help carry some of them.
Brian wouldn’t let her. “I can handle these. You don’t need to help.”
:
He was a tall man with rugged, bold features. His past as a bodyguard, combined with years of continued martial arts training worn after leaving the profession, meant he still had a strong, solid build. When she was with him, Louisa always felt like a little princess protected in an ivory tower–he’d never let her carry anything heavy.
But she couldn’t bear seeing her father travel all this way and still lug so much for her. She insisted,
Brian reluctantly handed her the lightest, smallest bag, his tone mildly scolding. “Didn’t I tell you not to come pick me up? What are you doing making this trip? Worried I’d get lost?”
Louisa linked her arm through his, acting coy. “I missed you.”
Brian’s eyes grew moist. Looking at Louisa, a trace of sadness flickered inadvertently in his gaze. Louisa didn’t notice.
She led Brian to the parking lot and loaded everything into the trunk. Once in the car, they chatted on the drive back, before they knew it, entering the city center.
On the way home, they stopped at the supermarket first. This supermarket was inside a large shopping mall. Though the prices were higher, the quality was excellent, and Louisa shopped there regularly.
She pulled into the parking lot and got out with her father.
At that moment, in another car not far away, Gareth was unwrapping a chocolate for his daughter.
Angelina had been behaving nicely when she suddenly spotted Louisa walking by outside. She pointed at Louisa and started yelling loudly, “Bad lady! That’s the bad lady!”
“Angelina, sweetie.” Gareth tried to soothe his daughter while looking in the direction she was pointing.
The moment he saw Louisa, a flash of delight crossed Gareth’s eyes. He’d actually been planning to leave Silverlight City today. He’d been considering whether to contact Julian–he’d wanted to see Louisa one more time. But worried it might cause misunderstandings, he hadn’t
brought it up.
Angelina kept ranting, “Bad lady, bad lady, she’s a bad lady, I don’t like her…”
Gareth couldn’t help being curious. “You’ve met her?”
Angelina huffed indignantly, “Bad lady. With pretty mister. Won’t let me hug him.”
Her words came out choppy and fragmented. But Gareth was used to his daughter’s speech patterns and immediately understood what had happened. Angelina must have met Louisa at Julian’s place last time.
He patiently explained to his daughter, “That lady is Julian’s girlfriend. Of course, she wasn’t happy about you wanting to hug her boyfriend. She’s not a bad lady.”
But Angelina wouldn’t listen, continuing to complain.
Gareth fell silent and turned back toward the window. By this time, Louisa and Brian had reached the supermarket entrance.
As they entered, Brian turned his head slightly. In that single glance, Gareth caught sight of his profile and was utterly stunned.
