Terrified that Louisa would change her mind, he spoke quickly. “I don’t know who your birth parents are. All I know is you’re not part of the Forbes family. You showed up the year I turned three. My dad brought you home. That day, he came back covered in blood, and you were a newborn. After that, we kept moving around. My mom said it was all because of you.”

Louisa’s face went pale.

But she showed no shock. Her expression was eerily calm.

Noah stood nearby, anxious to say something but not knowing what.

Louisa said nothing.

She stood, looked down at Hawk, then pulled the five thousand from her bag and tossed it beside him.

Without another word, she turned and left.

Noah hurried after her.

about today.”

Noah froze. “Why not?”

Louisa said, “He’s out of town on business. The situation there is serious. If you tell him now, you’ll just make him

Noah didn’t quite understand.

But he also felt like Louisa had a point.

Louisa turned back and gave Noah a faint smile. “If you want to tell him, wait until he’s back. Then you can.”

She had no intention of hiding this from Julian forever.

She wasn’t a saint.

The fact that Teresa had bailed Hawk out to come after her–she wouldn’t cover that up either.

But now wasn’t the time. Julian couldn’t afford to be distracted.

Noah thought it over. Louisa was right. Even if he told Julian now, Julian was too far away to do anything. It would only make him worry.

Better to wait until he got back.

With that in mind, Noah deleted the message he’d typed.

Then he flashed Louisa a brilliant smile. “I’ll listen to Ms. Forbes.”

Louisa patted his head and smiled. “Good boy. Let’s go.”

“You got it.” Noah started the car.

But on the way back, he didn’t drive as fast.

Thinking back to the conversation between Louisa and Hawk, he asked curiously, “Ms. Forbes, does that guy have

something on you?”

Louisa said, “Not really.”

Noah grew a bit anxious. “Will he try to do something to you? Should I tie him up and lock him away until Mr.

Tudor gets back?”

Louisa gazed out at the night sky. After a long silence, she said softly, “No need.”

She had never wronged anyone.

She didn’t regret sending Hawk to prison.

The only person she felt she owed was Riley,

Though Riley hadn’t treated her well, she had raised her.

That debt of upbringing–back then, Louisa had shown no mercy.

Though she felt no guilt, to outsiders, she really did look ungrateful.

If Hawk wanted to make a scene, let him.

If he made it big enough, the last traces of her guilt would vanish completely.

That night, Louisa tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep.

She didn’t care how Hawk smeared her reputation.

What she cared about was this: once Hawk made that incident public, she and Julian would truly be over.

She wanted to walk just a little further with him. Why was it so hard?
