Chapter 494
After they finished eating, it was almost one in the afternoon.
Louisa had booked a five o’clock flight.
She’d have to leave for the airport by three at the latest.
She asked Julian, “Are you going to the office this afternoon?”
Julian asked back, “What about you?”
Louisa said, “I took the day off. I want to rest at home.”
She wasn’t telling the truth. She hadn’t taken a day off–she’d applied for a transfer.
Once he got to the office, he’d see her transfer request.
Julian said, “Then I won’t go to the office either. I’ll stay home with you.”
He could clearly sense that Louisa had a lot on her mind today.
Besides the issue with her father, there had to be something else. He couldn’t just leave–he wouldn’t feel right about it.
Louisa froze for a moment, then forced a smile. “I’m not a child. I don’t need someone to keep me company.”
Julian sat down on the sofa and pulled her onto his lap. “You’re not a child, but you are my girlfriend.”
Louisa lowered her head, not responding, her heart heavy with bitterness.
Setting aside all external factors, he really was so good to her. So good it made her feel ashamed.
A deep sense of reluctance welled up inside her, and a wild thought crossed her mind: Even if she didn’t leave, what could
his mother really do to her?
The moment that thought surfaced, his phone rang.
It was his mother.
The instant she saw that name, it was like a bucket of cold water had been dumped over her head.
She snapped back to reality.

Whether she left or not wasn’t the main issue. The important thing was they had to break up.
Even if her father stopped pressuring her, his mother would pressure him.
Maybe this was for the best.
She pretended not to see his mother’s name and smiled at him. “You don’t need to stay with me. I want to go back and
sleep for a bit. If you have work, go ahead.”
Without giving him a chance to respond, she started to get up from his lap.
But Julian pulled her back into his arms.
He looked down at her, his tone tinged with helplessness. “Louisa, you don’t need to avoid my mother’s calls.”
Louisa said nothing.
Julian answered the phone.
He didn’t deliberately put it on speaker, but they were so close that Louisa could hear the voice on the other end.
Julian asked, “Mom, what’s up?”
Adeline’s tone was as gentle as always. “I heard you’re back. Come home for a bit. I need to talk to you about something.”
Louisa thought: Adeline must know about my afternoon flight. She’s calling Julian away to make sure I leave smoothly.
Julian, unaware of what she was thinking, replied directly to Adeline, “I just got back. I have a lot to handle. If you need to
say something, just tell me over the phone.”
Adeline paused, then William’s voice came through. “Julian, come home. There’s something important I need to ask you.
It’s not convenient over the phone.”
Julian paused for a moment, then agreed. “Got it.”
He hung up.
He looked down at Louisa in his arms. She sat quietly, saying nothing.
She was always like this. If she thought something wasn’t her place to ask, she absolutely wouldn’t–no matter what their
relationship was.
He explained on his own. “Last time I came back from Gravenford, I didn’t have time to go home before leaving on another
business trip. There are some things I need to go over with my dad. I’ll head home for a bit. You rest well at home, and if

anything comes up, call me, okay?”
“Okay. You should go. I’ll walk you out.”
Louisa was planning to go back to her own place anyway, so she walked him to the elevator.
Julian found it a little odd. It was rare for her to be this clingy.
But seeing that her expression seemed normal, he pushed down the faint unease in his chest.
He thought maybe he was overthinking it.
While waiting for the elevator, he pressed her into his arms and kissed her again.
Louisa responded just as passionately.
Even after the elevator had arrived, he reluctantly let her go. “Wait for me at home.”
Louisa smiled. Afraid he’d suspect something, she murmured her agreement.
Julian got into the elevator and descended.
She stood at the elevator door, watching blankly, her smile fading bit by bit.
Finally, she went back home.
At two–thirty in the afternoon, she grabbed her luggage and called a car to the airport.
Up until now, aside from herself, Adeline, and William, no one else knew she was going to the northwest.
She hadn’t even told her father.
She figured he’d probably agree anyway–after all, he wanted her and Julian to break up too.
She’d just tell him after she arrived in the northwest.
As for the truth about her background, she chose to bury it in her heart.
Brian had loved and protected her all her life. Even if they weren’t blood–related, he was closer to her than anyone.
In her heart, Brian was her father.
Whether she acknowledged it or not, it didn’t change anything.
