James shook his head. “Professor Climer, human lives are more important. If the viruses on these monkeys get to people and spread a lot, you drug experts and company bosses will be the ones in hot water. You’d be dead meat for sure.”

David swallowed hard, nervous as he begged again. “Mr. Clifford, don’t kill them unless you have no other choice. Please.”

James nodded. “Course. As long as you can handle them safely, we won’t shoot for no reason.”

Zoe noticed Iris hadn’t said a word since getting in the car. She looked worn, her lonely gaze locked on the window the entire time.

Zoe touched her arm softly. “Iris, are you okay?”

Iris snapped out of her daze, putting on a calm face. “I’m fine.”

Zoe touched her cheek, leaning in to look at her tired face. “You didn’t sleep well last night, did you?”

Iris leaned back in her seat, answering quietly, “Nah.”

Zoe rubbed her hand. “Don’t stress. We’ll catch Gary and find those ten monkeys for sure.”

Iris said nothing, closing her eyes to rest.

The car drove for more than five hours. By one o’clock in the afternoon, the police caught Gary hiding in a village in another state.

They only found five out of the ten monkeys.

Nobody had a clue where the rest went.

Iris and David quickly put isolation and protection on the monkeys. They disinfected the area where the monkeys had been carefully.

To find the other five monkeys fast, James took Gary to a nearby police station. He worked with the local cops to question him.

The police questioned him for half a day, but got nothing out of him.

Gary was placed in custody and transported away. The five monkeys they found got sent back to the

research institute too.

The five missing monkeys were like a ticking time bomb. They could start a big epidemic any second.

They traveled between two states that day, and everyone was swamped until midnight.

Zoe linked her arm, walking out side by side. “You don’t gotta be so polite with Arthur.”

Iris got into Arthur’s car.

The 1200-yard drive only took four minutes, and they pulled up to the neighborhood gate.

“Thanks, Arthur.” Iris thanked him and reached for the door handle.

Iris’s hand froze on the door handle. She looked at Zoe. “Find out what?”
