Iris looked up at him, her eyes dull. “Arthur, you got something else?”

“You’re all in your head. You look beat and down. If you need it, I can give you free therapy.”

“I’m fine, thanks.” Iris thanked him nicely, then turned and walked through the neighborhood gate.

Arthur smirked a little and climbed back into the car.

As soon as he sat down, Zoe grabbed him by the collar and tugged him close. “Arthur, are you out of your mind? Julian’s car was right up front a minute ago. Why’d you go give her medicine? You’re trying to start a fight between them on purpose!”

Arthur pulled her hand off his collar and fixed his tie. “Where’s Julian’s car?”

“It drove into the underground parking lot over there.” Zoe planted her hands on her hips, ticked off. “Don’t change the subject. Before Iris went on that blind date, I asked if you liked her. You said she was just like a little sister to you. What are you doing now?”

“I’m helping her.” Arthur buckled his seatbelt.

Zoe scoffed. “Save it. You’re obviously trying to stir up trouble between her and Julian.”

“What’s my job?”

“A therapist!”

“Exactly. I read people better than you do.”

“Save it. I’m calling Julian right now to explain, so he doesn’t get the wrong idea about Iris.” Zoe pulled out her phone to find his number.

Arthur snatched her phone out of her hand, his face cold. “Julian likes guys.”

Zoe froze, totally shocked.

Yeah, she’d thought that too, but Iris wouldn’t believe it.

Now that Arthur said it, she was even surer.

“Iris won’t believe that. You got any proof?” Zoe asked, nervous.

Arthur scoffed, starting the car slowly and pulling away. “I’ve never been wrong about people”,

Zoe slouched, her face sad. “What about Iris? She wanted a divorce before, but Julian talked her out of it. She likes him so much, and he tricked her into a fake marriage. It’s so messed up.”

Arthur chuckled, not really caring. “Iris isn’t love-struck. She looks soft, but she’s actually really sensible. She doesn’t like Julian as much as you think.”

Zoe asked, “How do you know that?”

Arthur analyzed it calmly. “When you love someone deeply, you should at least know him fully, share sweet days with him, and stand together through hard times. But Iris and Julian met on a blind date. At most, she’s drawn to his manners, his personality, and his looks. That’s liking, sure. Plus, he’s her first love and her husband.

“For a girl who’s never been in love before, those two things make him feel simple and nice to want. That’s why she keeps hoping for more from him.

“The liking she built up over three months got worn down little by little by Julian’s coldness the past two years. Now there’s only hope left. Once Iris figures it out and lets go, she’ll leave for good and that liking will be gone too.”

Zoe got goosebumps, rubbing her arms as she looked at Arthur. “Arthur, you say you don’t like Iris, but why do you know her feelings so good?”

“Occupational hazard.”

“Then you must’ve figured out Julian too, right?”

Arthur nodded. “If Iris is a sensible woman, Julian’s the opposite. He’s super emotional and he’s love- struck.”

That made Zoe laugh. “Your skills ain’t even that good. Julian? Love-struck? You kidding me? If he was really love-struck, he’d go marry his boyfriend overseas instead of using Iris to hide he’s gay.”

A dark look flickered in Arthur’s eyes. “Not only is he love-struck, he’s paranoid too. He’s got a cleanliness complex with women, and he’s real good at hiding stuff. The chance of him letting go on his own is zero. If Iris wants a divorce, it’s gonna be real hard.”

Zoe sighed helplessly. “Looks like you’re right again. I wanna help Iris too, but not like you just did- stirring up trouble between them.”

“I got an idea. Wanna hear it?”

Zoe closed her eyes, pretending to sleep. “No. I don’t wanna end up like Celeste, losing my best friend.”

“You don’t wanna help her get out of this loveless marriage sooner?”

Zoe pressed her lips together and fell quiet for a moment. Then she said, “Iris is soft on the outside but tough on the inside. If she wants a divorce, nobody can stop her. If she doesn’t, nobody can talk her into it.”

“I’d like to see that.”

“Arthur, I warn you. Don’t play dirty. If I catch you messing with Iris, I’ll never forgive you.”

Arthur smiled, saying nothing.
