off. “You don’t need to change. It won’t matter. I don’t know what feelings you’ve been holding in, and you’re not going to tell me anyway. But Julian, I don’t love you anymore. Filing for divorce has nothing to do with you ignoring me.”
Julian looked up at her. His red eyes were soaked. He gave a bitter smile and his voice was almost shaking. “Like you ever loved me.
His words were full of disappointment and heartache.
A sharp pain suddenly hit Iris’s heart. Her pulse raced, throbbing painfully.
She could feel how low, disappointed, and angry Julian was.
Tears had even bloodshot his eyes, but he held them back, keeping them in check. He talked to her in the softest, gentlest voice.
No denying it. He was a man with a steady temper.
But he was also really good at ignoring people.
Iris felt a pang of sadness in her chest. Since they were getting divorced, there was no point in explaining. She pulled herself together and agreed with him, “Yeah. I never loved you. Now I just don’t want to be with you anymore.
Julian suddenly clenched his fist, bent his elbow, and leaned toward her.
Iris trembled, tensing up. Her heart raced with fear.
He pressed his arm against the wall, resting his forehead on it. His other hand propped beside Iris, trapping her in his arms. It looked like he was holding her, but their bodies were just inches apart. His hot breath surrounded her like a furnace.
He made a sound in his nose as he inhaled.
His breathing shook, and his strong body felt heavy and trembling too.
The last time Iris saw him this sad was at his grandfather’s funeral.
Seeing Julian like this made her feel bad too.
They’d only known each other for three months before getting married. After that, he didn’t like her. He ignored her for two whole years. Only recently had things gotten a little better.
She couldn’t figure out why Julian was so sad, so hurt, so angry.
Her heart softened. She wanted to hug him.
reason told her no.
She couldn’t get fooled by Julian’s sudden change. This wasn’t love. It was just a trick to make her not

There was a long road ahead. She didn’t want to waste her energy in this marriage anymore. She didn’t want to foolishly wait for a man to love her. She didn’t want to let his mood swings ruin her days.
Most importantly, she needed to meet Frederick’s demands. She had to trade the divorce for the virus- carrying monkeys.
If there was even a little hope in this marriage, she wouldn’t have chosen to divorce just to get the monkeys back.
Iris’s heart ached faintly. She closed her teary eyes, took a deep breath, and spoke softly. “Julian, I’ll move out once I find a place in a few days.”
“Iris, don’t push me.” Julian’s hoarse voice cracked.
Iris pressed herself against the wall, slowly turning her head to look at Julian’s profile, buried in his arm. They were so close. She could feel him trembling in pain, but she couldn’t see if he was crying, or hear any sound from him.
Tears welled up in Iris’s eyes. Letting go of her first love and her marriage left her filled with reluctance. But she had to admit, this was a failed marriage. She felt depressed and sad. “Julian, let’s break up nicely.”
“I won’t agree to the divorce. Even if I hire the best lawyer, even if I bribe the judge…”
Iris got mad. “Are you crazy? You’ll stop at nothing? You want to do something illegal?”
Julian laughed coldly, a bitter, convulsive laugh. His hand slowly tightened, wrapping around the back of her neck.
Iris’s heart skipped a beat.
Julian suddenly lifted his face from his arm, leaning down to press his lips against hers.
Iris froze, not moving, not resisting. She let him kiss her.
Her heart hurt so bad. His cheeks were soaking wet.
His kiss tasted like tears.
In that moment, she realized how many tears Julian had shed.
But how much of those tears were real, and how much were just for show?
He kissed her for a long time.
So long that Iris’s lips felt swollen and sore, and her head felt light from lack of oxygen.
Julian pulled away gently, resting his forehead against hers.
They both closed their eyes, gasping. Their hot breath tangled together.
Julian held her cheeks with both hands, his voice light and choked. “Since we got married, I never slept
