Chapter 136 Unspoken Regret
Iris couldn’t give her any advice. “So what do you plan to do?”
“I just don’t buy that I’ll run into one of those super rare good guys on a blind date. I’m doing hoe alone. 1 don’t wanna get married, or go live with a whole new strange family and wait on every last one of them.
“Then just be yourself, no matter what.”
“My parents are way too pushy. It’s impossible to stand up to them. Zoe let out a long, heavy sigh.
Suddenly, both of them froze in their tracks, staring straight ahead.
Julian was hurrying right toward them.
The dim yellow streetlight fell on him, making him look tall and straight, gentle and good-looking
Iris frowned, clearly annoyed, and stared right at Zoe.
Zoe felt guilty. She hated that she’d ratted out her friend, and she never thought Iris would suspect her so fast. She couldn’t hide anymore, so she apologized in a rush. “I’m sorry, Iris. Julian’s been coming to the lab looking for you every day this week. I just couldn’t take it anymore.”
Zoe didn’t wait for a response, rushing toward the subway station. “I’m going home first. Bye.”
Iris felt drained. She stood there, not moving, and turned her eyes to Julian.
His expression was dark, and he looked utterly worn down.
“What do you
want?” Iris spoke up first.
Julian was still a little out of breath. “I got the trial notice. July first.”
Iris nodded her head.
Julian let out a bitter laugh. “Divorces usually take four or five months. Ours is over in less than a month. We didn’t even do mediation. Isn’t that crazy?”
“Everyone wants us divorced,” Iris said, keeping her voice steady even though her heart was hurting. “Me included.”
“I really don’t wanna get divorced. I don’t wanna let you leave.” Julian’s voice was filled with despair, every word sounding helpless. “But I really… can’t fix this.”
Iris’s heart went soft, a sharp pain spreading through her chest. Her eyes started to water.
It had taken all her strength to make up her mind. She told herself she couldn’t give him another chance.
But every time she thought about him, that decision started to slip.
She was scared. Scared that this so-called chance would end up hurting her later. Scared of making the same mistakes, of going back to those days where she felt drained and miserable.

Chapter 136 Unspoken Regret
On top of that, Frederick’s cold threat hung over her like a heavy mountain, impossible to shake off.
She knew this divorce had to happen.
Iris held back her pain, keeping her voice calm. “Julian, the more you fixate on something, the more you get stuck. Give it time. When we both calm down, we’ll look back at this like it’s someone else’s story. We’ll just laugh, shake our heads, and see it wasn’t that big of a deal.”
Julian took one step forward, reached out his arm, and pulled her into a hug.
Iris’s body stiffened a little, freezing where she stood.
Her heart started to race.
This familiar hug made her self-control start to fall apart.
She had to admit it-she still liked him a lot.
Chemistry driven by physical instinct never faded quickly.
Julian’s big hand gently held the back of her head, pressing his face against her head. His voice sounded worn out, dark, shaky, and hoarse. “Because I messed up once, you forgot all the good things I did for you But do you know? When I found your flaws, I never thought about leaving you.”
Those words felt like sharp needles, stabbing right into Iris’s heart. It was so painful she could barely breathe.
She bit down hard on her lower lip, telling herself over and over not to give in. “Julian, please stop. Okay?”
Julian squeezed her tighter, like he wanted to pull her right into his bones. “You disappeared from my life for five days. I haven’t slept well once this week. I fell asleep on the sofa at home a little while ago and had a dream you didn’t want me anymore. I woke up scared to death, and then I realized it wasn’t a dream. It was real.”
Iris heard the fear and the reluctance in his voice. Her heart was all messed up. She pulled away from his hug, stepping back two steps.
The warm yellow streetlight covered him, the hazy light making his sharp features stand out even more. A thick cloud of gloom surrounded him, and his usually gentle eyes were red and tearful.
Seeing him like that made Iris flustered. “Julian, you’re not acting like yourself. This isn’t who you are.”
Julian gave a sad smile. “Then who am I supposed to be?”
Iris had no words to say.
