Brandon stroked her hair and put down the dryer, his other hand cupping her cheek. “I’ll wake up early tomorrow and pack. You’re tired, so go to sleep first.”
Yvette bit her lower lip, her eyes suddenly welling up.
Two weeks felt like forever!
Brandon gave her a quick kiss on the lips and murmured dotingly, “I’m going to take a shower.”
Yvette let go of his waist and stepped back.
Brandon chuckled, rubbed her head, and took the hairdryer into the bathroom.
He didn’t take his pajamas in with him.
The sound of splashing water came from the bathroom.
Yvette went into the walk–in closet, pulled out Brandon’s suitcase, and opened his wardrobe.
She saw his suits and shirts neatly organized by color, along with a few stylish casual summer outfits.
Yvette helped him pack his clothes, including some casual wear, pajamas, underwear, and socks.
When she went to get his watches and ties, she opened a drawer.
A beautiful, exquisite box caught her eye.
She remembered it clearly. It was the gift Brandon had prepared for Zoe’s birthday. Zoe hadn’t wanted it, so he had brought it back.
She hadn’t expected him to still be keeping it in his closet.
Even though she knew he could never let go of his first love, she usually tried to deceive herself and not think about it when it wasn’t in front of her.
But seeing it now, she couldn’t help but feel a sharp pang of bitterness.
She told herself to be more open–minded and let it go, but the more she loved him, the easier

it was to get jealous, sad, and selfish. She wanted his heart.
A heart that belonged entirely to her.

She grabbed a tie and two watches, quickly shut the drawer, finished packing his suitcase, and zipped it up, leaving it in a prominent spot.
She went back to the room, turned off the lights, climbed into the large bed, and pulled up the thin blanket.
Tears silently escaped the corners of her eyes, soaking the pillow.
By the time Brandon came out wearing only a towel, the lights were already out.
He sighed softly, thinking Yvette would have waited for him.
He figured she was just too exhausted.
He stepped lightly into the closet to put on his pajamas. Seeing the packed suitcase, a happy smile spread across his face.
He walked back out, moved slowly, and climbed into the large bed, lying down gently.
Yvette was sleeping with her back to him.
He let out a deep breath and leaned toward her back.
Moving very slowly, he cautiously slid his arm under her neck and wrapped his other arm around her waist, pulling her soft body into his embrace.
Yvette wasn’t asleep. Her body was tense as she pretended to be out, but when her back hit his solid chest and he pulled her close, her tears betrayed her again.
Brandon, if you can’t let go of Zoe, why do you act like you love me so much?
That night, he just held her tight. In his sleep, he would occasionally nuzzle her, kissing her hair and neck.
The next morning, Yvette woke up slowly in the morning light.
The spot beside her was already cold, leaving only a trace of Brandon’s faint, clean scent on the pillow.
She snapped her eyes open and turned her head. The empty bed made her heart sink, and then she remembered Brandon had already left for his flight.

She slowly sat up and touched the spot where he had slept, as if she could still feel a lingering warmth.
Just as she was feeling down, a white slip of paper slid off the nightstand. She hurried to pick it
On the paper was Brandon’s strong yet gentle handwriting: “Yvette, by the time you see this, I’ll be on the plane to the Middle East. Eat well and get some rest. If anything bothers you, don’t keep it inside. Remember to call me. I’ll miss you.”
Yvette clutched the note to her chest, her eyes instantly blurring.
She pressed the paper against her heart, as if it could bring her closer to him.
But then she thought of that gift box hidden in the drawer, and a wave of bitterness washed over her again.
Was his tenderness and love for her real? But his feelings for his first love were real too. It made her feel constantly insecure about their relationship.
As she was lost in thought, she heard a car downstairs.
Yvette got up, went to the bathroom to wash up, changed her clothes, and walked out of the
room.
In the living room, Ginevra and Julian were sitting with their daughter, Ya–ya, chatting.
Yvette hurried downstairs.
Hearing her, Ginevra stood up with a gentle smile. “Yvette! My brother is away on business, and he was worried you’d be lonely, so he asked us to come stay with you!”
Ya–ya looked up with big eyes and said in a sweet, childish voice, “Auntie, I’m here to play with you. I’ll be a good girl!”
Yvette looked at them, a warm feeling rising in her chest. “Thank you guys.”
Ginevra pulled Yvette down to sit on the couch, her face full of joy. “Yvette, the honeymoon isn’t even over and my brother is away for so long. You don’t blame him, do you?”
“No,” Yvette said, shaking her head quickly.
In the days that followed, with Ginevra’s family around, Yvette’s life wasn’t so lonely anymore.
After work, Ya–ya would pester her to tell stories and play games.
