Zoe’s eyes turned red. She cupped Iris’s face, which was still dazed with excitement. Iris, we lost something small, but gained something huge. It’s Everhart Group’s loss for not partnering with us. Now the government’s joining in. If this new drug succeeds, we’ll be at the top of a whole new field in the world!

Iris was too excited to say a word. Happy tears rolled down her face, but her smile was bright.

Her hard work had finally paid off.

Seeing Iris’s happy tears, Zoe hugged her, patting her head. You’ve had it so hard these years. Studying day and night, barely taking a few days off all year. It breaks my heart. But hey, hard work always pays off.

Iris calmed down, letting her excitement sink in. She pulled away from Zoe’s hug, smiling happily. “Zoe, if this drug hits the market, my career will take a huge leap. I’ll have money to help Ethan, to give my parents a better life. All the troubles will disappear.

Zoe held Iris’s face, wiping the tears from her cheeks. You’re a shining star. I really admire you, and I’m so lucky to be your best friend and your righthand woman. Let all those blind fools who can’t see your worth go to hell!

Iris smiled knowingly. She heard the hidden meaning in Zoe’s words. Those blind foolswere definitely a dig at Julian.

On her way home, Iris walked lightly, feeling weightless.

She bought two sandwiches on the street, eating them as she walked.

As soon as she got home, she took a shower. After her shower, she locked herself in her room, studying every second she could.

With her current achievements and ability, getting a PhD wouldn’t be hard for her.

But she didn’t want to slack off.

She was so focused that she didn’t even hear a sound from outside.

Time ticked by. When she was so tired she couldn’t go on, Iris looked up from her books and checked her phone. It was already midnight.

She stood up to stretch, grabbed her empty cup, and walked out of her room.

The bright moonlight filled the living room, making everything easy to see. She didn’t turn on the lights, walking straight to the kitchen and opening the fridge.

Her hand paused as she reached for the milk. Her eyes fell on a clear container that was filled to the brim with her favorite fruits.

She hadn’t bought them. It must’ve been Julian.

Just a little gesture.

But her heart felt warm, soft, and filled with joy.

She poured some milk, grabbed an orange, and left the kitchen.

Chapter 49 Late Night Encounter

As she passed Julian’s door, she stopped, staring at the glowing crack under it.

Julian isn’t asleep yet?

She wanted to knock and say thank you.

Thank him for the fruits.

And share her joy with him.

She stood there for a long time, but couldn’t work up the courage.

What if the fruits weren’t for her? What if Julian didn’t want to hear her share, or even see her?

After all, Julian had said she was boring and that he hated her.

She hung her head, looking at the orange in her hand. Her heart felt empty. Suddenly, she just wanted to see himjust for a second, even if they didn’t talk.

Suddenly, the door opened.

Light from the room spilled out. Iris jumped, her heart racing. She stepped back, staring at Julian, lost for what to do.

He was wearing casual pajamas, one hand in his pocket. His tall, straight figure was backlit, his sharp features looking even deeper and more handsome in the dim light. His dark, unreadable eyes were on her.

It was like Julian had known she was standing there. He didn’t look surprised at all. He spoke calmly. Need something?

Iris’s heart skipped a beat.

From Julian’s reaction, he’d definitely known she was there and opened the door on purpose.

How did he know?

Iris guessed he hadn’t slept yet. He’d heard the noise outside and checked the security camera to see her in the living room.

Iris was so nervous she didn’t know what to say. She held up the orange, her voice soft. Can I eat your fruit?

Julian said, I got them for you.

Not bought specially for me?

Even if it was an afterthought, Iris’s heart still felt warm. Thanks.

Julian didn’t respond. He just stared at her quietly.

Iris bit her lip, thought for a second, and couldn’t think of anything else to say. Good night.

She turned to go back to her room.
