Iris hung her head, dabbing at her cheeks and eyes. The weight in her chest got heavier by the second, like a boulder crushing her lungs.

She took a quiet breath and grabbed her phone to check the time.

It was 11:18 PM.

Panicked, she picked up her bag off the floor and tried to head to her room.

Julian grabbed her wrist. “Answer me.”

Iris avoided his gaze. Her voice was cold, but weak. “It’s work-related. I messed up a bunch today.”

Julian scoffed, a bitter laugh slipping out. “You might not check gossip, but what about your best friend?”

Iris closed her eyes, fighting back the hurt with all her strength. But she couldn’t shake the unfairness of it all. She looked up, her wet, red eyes glistening as she met his stare.

“I called you this morning. Selena answered.”

Julian pulled out his phone calmly, opened his call log, and flipped through it. “No record. Someone deleted it.”

“I don’t need to check trends or gossip,” Iris said, forcing a calm tone. But her heart was bleeding, and her voice trembled with pain. “You have so many romantic rumors. I don’t have the energy to look them up one by one.”

Julian frowned a little, his face darkening. “This isn’t like those fake paparazzi shots from before.”

“Same thing. I’m used to it.”

Julian let go of her wrist, his breath heavy. “Iris, your whole ‘no tears, no drama’ act is convenient. But it’s also annoying as hell.”

With that, he stood up and stepped away from the sofa.

If he hated her this much, why trap them both in this miserable marriage? Why keep torturing each other?

Iris stood up too, wiping the tears from her eyes. Her voice shook, but it was firm.

“Julian, let’s get divorced.”

The room went dead silent the second she said it.

The air felt heavy, like an invisible net pressing down on their chests, leaving them gasping for breath.

That silence made Iris panic.

But she’d had enough.

She was just a simple, ordinary girl trying to get by. What did she ever do to deserve this?

A guy like him, always surrounded by women with one romantic rumor after another, was not worth loving

Whether she was a replacement or not, her faded love and broken heart died for good when he cheated with Selena.

Iris spoke slowly, every word steady. “I really don’t want to be with you anymore.”

Julian turned around and walked up to her. His long fingers lifted her chin gently, forcing her to look at him.

His eyes were deep and unreadable, glistening with a feverish, bloodshot hue. His face was dark, but a cold smile pulled at his lips. His voice was soft, almost gentle

“Iris, you said you’re used to it. Why can’t you handle it this time? Are you sad? Or just grossed out?”

Tears still glistened in Iris’s eyes, but she didn’t look away. She stared right back at him, her eyes wet.

“Grossed out.”

Julian laughed bitterly, his words hinting at something more. “Yeah, it is gross. But you’ll never know what real torment feels like-what it’s like to be in so much pain you can’t breathe. You just think it’s gross.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Iris didn’t get his meaning.

She was grossed out, sure. But she was also hurt and sad.

If she walked away now, she wouldn’t have to suffer. She wouldn’t have to be tormented.

But if she stayed, this marriage would turn into nothing but pure agony.

Julian let go of her chin, shoving his hands into his pockets. He looked calm, like he was chatting about the weather.

“You don’t need to know. Just remember this-if I wanted to let you go, I never would’ve married you two years ago. Once we tied the knot, divorce was never on the table.”

Iris clenched her fists, her hands shaking with anger. Tears blurred her vision again.

He said “let you go.”

What kind of hatred made him treat marriage like a cage? Trapping her, refusing to set her free?

He didn’t love her, but he still wanted to make her miserable?

“Marriage isn’t just your call,” Iris said, forcing herself to stay calm, her tone sharper. “We have no feelings, no real marriage. And now you’re cheating. I’ve got plenty of reasons to sue for divorce.”

Julian lowered his dark eyes. He hooked his hand around the back of her neck, pulling her closer. His voice was softer than ever, almost cooing.

“Iris, you can throw a fit about anything. Just don’t bring up divorce. Feelings are messy-no one gets them. We can fix the ‘real marriage’ part anytime. And this cheating stuff? It’s a lie. Total bull.”
