Even hearing this story again, Jenny still felt happy and romantic. She covered her mouth and smiled.

Iris listened carefully from the side.

“Every single day after school, he’d ride his bike for 30 minutes all the way to the gate of Oakridge High School, just to catch a glimpse of her when she got out. He dug up every little detail about her and asked everyone he could about her. Eventually, he even transferred to her school.”

Hearing that, Iris was shocked. Julian was a transfer student at Oakridge High School? So they didn’t just go to the same college–they went to the same high school too!

Jenny said excitedly, “I know that! Oakridge High School is the top high school around here. Back then, to get into Oakridge High, Julian studied day and night. He even asked Uncle Frederick to hire more than ten tutors for him.

“Besides eating and sleeping, his schedule was packed with classes. He studied for a year still couldn’t get in, so he asked Uncle Frederick to pull some strings to get him in.”

Jenny patted Luke’s shoulder lightly. “Do you know what his goal was–the one he put up on his bedroom wall?”

Luke shook his head. “I was slacking off back then. How would I know his goal?”

Jenny smiled brightly. “His goal was to get into the same university as her. To chase that girl, he really pushed himself so hard.

“He got up at 5 a.m. to study, did papers until 1 a.m., skipped naps, didn’t hang out with friends, and even gave up basketball–his favorite thing. He’d get mad at anyone who interrupted his studies.

“Uncle Frederick even asked him back then, ‘What school do you want to go to? I’ll donate two buildings to get you in. Just sleep well and stop studying so hard.‘ But he refused.

“He insisted on getting in with his own ability. On the day the SAT results came out, I heard him crying in his room.”

Luke sighed. “I guess that girl must have been really amazing. That’s why Julian always said he wasn’t good enough for her, and he didn’t dare confess. He just worked hard quietly to be worthy of her. I wonder if they got together in college.”

Jenny raised her eyebrows and glanced at Iris, speaking proudly. “Of course they did!”

“Really?”

“Totally! Back in college, he had a thin black hair tie on his wrist–the kind girls use to tie their hair. It must have been a token of their love. He wore it for a long time.

“And once, he even asked May what to do if a girl had menstrual cramps and anemia. May taught him to make ginger honey tea. He made it for six days in a row and took it to college himself.”

Luke let out a long sigh. “It’s been 12 years now. I wonder if he’s still with that girl.”

“No.” Jenny’s tone dropped, full of regret. She looked at Iris with a hint of resentment. “He must have lost his mind. He was supposed to study for a two–year master’s degree at Westmoor University, but he only stayed for a year and a half.

“He came back in a hurry. Then he went on a blind date and married an ordinary girl- ordinary family, ordinary background, ordinary looks, ordinary education, and ordinary job. She’s ordinary in every way.”

Luke looked shocked. “Julian’s married?”

“Yeah, but they’ll be getting a divorce soon!” Jenny glared at Iris, gritting her teeth.

Iris let out a soft sigh, stood up slowly, and turned to leave the living room.

She didn’t care at all about Jenny’s words. But when she thought about Julian’s first love, her heart felt tight and heavy.

So Julian had met such a great first love when he was young.
