“I already met him. Luke, right?” Iris didn’t want to go inside. It would be way too awkward.

After all, Luke and Jenny had been ganging up on her earlier. He had no idea she was Julian’s wife.

Julian smiled softly. “Why not wait inside?”

“I wanted to give Jenny and Luke some space.”

Julian chuckled and nodded. “They’re basically childhood sweethearts. Both of them like each other a lot.”

Iris switched the subject. “What did Frederick want to talk to you about?”

“Nothing much, just small talk.” Julian took her hand and walked toward the car. His tone was a little heavy, like something was bothering him.

They got in the car. Iris put on her seatbelt and sat up straight.

Julian didn’t start the car.

Iris turned to look at him. His face was dark. He hadn’t put on his seatbelt and he wasn’t ready to drive. He just sat there quietly, surrounded by a heavy, low mood.

Julian didn’t say a word, but Iris could tell he was torn.

Her heart felt a little sour. The lavender farm she’d been looking forward to was probably not going to happen. She couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed.

She understood Julian’s trouble. She pretended not to care and said, “Go see Lily if you need to. We can go to the lavender farm another day.”

Julian looked surprised and turned to her.

Iris forced a smile, calm as always. “Drop me off at the subway station. I’ll take the subway home.”

“How did you know I planned to go see Lily?” Julian looked confused.

Iris avoided his eyes, stared ahead, and spoke in a soft, weak voice, a little helpless. “Jenny told me some stuff about Lily. I can guess what Frederick said to you in the study. Whether Lily is faking being sick or not, she’s not eating, not going out, and making herself depressed. Her overreaction made all the elders blame me for everything.”

Iris sighed, lowered her head, and twisted the skirt with her fingers. She kept talking. “She drank the wrong bottle of water and said some things that weren’t true. To the elders, that’s no big deal. But you fired her, cut ties with her, and made her depressed and stop eating. The elders from both families will only think you went too far. And I’ll be the one who ruined your friendship.”

Julian slowly took her hand, gently rubbing the back of it with his thumb. He leaned back in his seat. “You see things so clearly. Be honest, do you care? Do you care if I go see Lily?”

Yes, she cared so much.

But she couldn’t say that.

If she did, Julian would probably not go.

If he couldn’t calm Lily down and she did something stupid to hurt herself, all the blame would fall on her. She might even get Zoe in trouble.

Frederick would definitely use this to force Julian to divorce her. Lily’s parents would never let her or Zoe go.

Iris shook her head with a smile. “I don’t care. I know you only see her as a little sister, a childhood friend, a buddy. You never saw her as a woman. If you did, I wouldn’t be here right

now.”

Iris was calm and clear–sighted, easy to handle. But Julian didn’t look happy. A faint look of disappointment flashed in his eyes. He let go of her hand and put on his seatbelt. “I’ll take you home first. It’s okay if I go see her later. From what I know of her, she’s probably faking it.”

He started the car and left Rosehill Estate.

“Maybe she’s not faking it.” Iris’s voice was soft, but her heart felt heavy. “After all, she really likes you.”

Julian brushed it off. “You’re overthinking it.”

“I’m not overthinking. She really likes you. Like, romantically.”

Julian’s face turned dark all of a sudden. The veins in his arm holding the steering wheel stood out a little. He didn’t say anything for a long time.

He tried to process what she said. The air in the car got really cold.

Suddenly, Julian spoke up. “What about you?”
