Chapter 139 A Hand on Her Belly

The plane landed safely in Grandridge. Agnes didn’t return to the villa with Raymond. Instead, she went back to her own courtyard house.

Raymond drove her there himself, and when she stepped out, he fingered. He stood by the car, then at the gate, unwilling to leave.

She didn’t give him the chance to ask. She closed the door quietly behind her and stood behind the window screen, watching until he finally turned away, disappointment etched into the set of his shoulders

The courtyard felt both familiar and distant. Standing there, Agnes found herself caught between relief and something harder to name.

Everything that had happened in Velmara felt unreal now, like a fever dream she had barely survived.

And yet she had come back. Alive.

She sat with herself for a long while, letting the silence untangle the knots in her chest. Then she pushed the thoughts aside. She needed to see Rebecca.

Raymond had told her certain things about her assistant. But no matter what he said, she couldn’t bring herself to suspect Rebecca.

Surely Rebecca had been worried sick. Surely she had been working every possible channel, reaching out to the embassy, doing everything she could.

Agnes took a car to Rebecca’s apartment. When she arrived, the place was empty.

She stood before the door, plastered with a “For Rent” sign. Rebecca moved out? Where would she go?

Her phone had been lost in Velmara. She hadn’t yet had time to reclaim her old number.

She pulled out the temporary phone she had picked up and dialed from memory.

The line connected quickly. Rebecca’s voice came through, light and familiar. “Hello?”

Agnes opened her mouth to speak, but before she could, a voice sounded in the background, calling from

a distance.

“Ms. Foster, she’s here.”

Agnes went still. Who’s that?

On the other end, Rebecca glanced at the silent line, assumed it was a wrong number, and hung up The

call ended.

Agnes stood there, something unsettled stirring beneath the surface. Then, slowly, realization began to take shape. She hailed a cab to the hospital.

She slipped inside wearing sunglasses, moving quietly through the corridors unul she found the room she was looking for. What she saw through the small window stopped her cold.

A woman sat in the chair beside the bed, expensively dressed, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue

Rebecca sat next to her, one arm around the woman’s shoulders, offering comfort. It was intimate

Familiar.

In the bed behind them lay a man connected to a web of tubes and monitors-Ethan.

The woman reached out with one hand and placed it gently on Rebecca’s belly. There was tenderness in

the gesture.

Agnes turned and walked away without going inside.

She remembered what Rebecca had told her: that she was done with the disaster that had been her relationship with Ethan.

And yet there she was, in his hospital room.

Together with whom Agnes assumed was his mother.

Their interaction suggested something clear: the Nolans had accepted Rebecca and the child she carried

Agnes forced herself to breathe. Maybe she was reading too much into it. Rebecca was pregnant. Alone.

With Agnes missing and unreachable, maybe she had nowhere else to turn. Maybe she had gone to the Nolans out of necessity, not choice. After all, the child she carried was a Nolan.

She went back to the courtyard house and lay awake the entire night, staring at the ceiling. The doubt had taken root, and she couldn’t shake it.

Would Rebecca truly have betrayed her? For what?/She turned the question over and over. searching for ar answer that made sense, and found none.

The next morning, Agnes sat in front of her computer, unmoving. Her thoughts drifted again and again to the scene in the hospital.

She couldn’t sit with it any longer. She needed to know.

She went straight to the Tidewhisper Lily studio. The moment she walked through the door everyone inside went rigid. The air seemed to thicken, to hold its breath.

Rebecca had her back to the entrance. She must have seen the expressions on her colleagues faces. because she turned slowly. The color drained from her face.

She took an involuntary step back, her hand bracing against the desk behind her. For a moment, her eyes flashed with disbelief, confusion, and something that looked very much like tear.

But it lasted only a second. The next moment, her expression collapsed Tears welled, then spilled over in heavy drops. “Agnes!” she cried, her voice breaking. “You’re back!”

She hurried forward despite her heavy belly, wrapping her arms tightly around Agnes.

“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” Her voice trembled, thick with emotion. “I was so worried… You had in
