Chapter 158 A Deal in the Shadows

Agnes wanted nothing more than to grab a knife and cut Larry to pieces. Grind him down to nothing. Make sure he is gone forever.

She dug her nails into her arm, hard enough to bruise. It was the only way she could hold back the rage boiling inside her.

Larry couldn’t die. Not just yet. She still needed him to find the rea! mastermind.

“Was that man with the scar the one who picked you up from prison?” Agnes asked.

Larry nodded quickly. “Yeah, it was him. He didn’t really come to pick me up. He came to warn me not to talk. I never told him where I live, and my wife moved with our kid a few times, but they still found us easily.”

He swallowed and went on, “They promised to send my whole family overseas. Now they say the visa is hard to get, so we have to wait. They also said they’ll contact me again if they need something… I don’t even know what they’ll make me do next.”

“Who told him to find you?” Agnes asked.

“I’ve never met the person behind him,” Larry said. “It’s always that scar–faced guy. But I’ve seen the man before.”

Agnes narrowed her eyes. “Did he ever tell you why he wanted you to kill my mother?”

Larry shook his head. “Why would he tell me that? I needed money. I took the job and didn’t ask questions.”

Agnes let out a cold laugh. “So your daughter’s life/matters, but other people’s don’t?”

Larry lowered his head, too ashamed to argue.

Agnes took a photo out of her bag and handed it to him. “Do you know this man?”

Larry studied the picture closely. Then his eyes widened. “It’s him! That’s the guy! He was with the scar- faced man. The scar guy treated him with a lot of respect. He must be someone important. He always had people around him.”

Agnes let out a quiet breath. So it really was connected to Harvey.

“Larry,” she said, “I’ll donate bone marrow to save your daughter. But from today on, you listen to me. If that scar–faced man contacts you or asks you to do anything, you tell me everything.”

Larry hesitated. “But… what if they find out I betrayed them? They’ll kill my whole family.

Agnes looked at him calmly. “Even if you stay loyal, do you really think they’ll let you live after what you know? Why do you think they came back to you instead of sending you overseas like they promised?”

She paused, then added, “Think about it. For your daughter, you don’t have a choice. You’re either with me or with them.”

Larry fell silent, deep in thought.

His wife hadn’t spoken. She suddenly started hitting him hard.

“What are you hesitating?” she shouted. “A life for a life–you owe them that! This lady is kind enough to save our daughter, and you’re still hesitating? Have you lost your conscience?!”

Tears streamed down her face as she yelled, “This is your fault! The people you got involved with brough this on our daughter! It’s all because of you!“.

Larry nodded again and again. Then he looked at Agnes. “I understand. I’ll listen to you from now on.”

Agnes stood up and picked up her bag. Before leaving, she said, “Keep living like normal. Don’t let them notice anything. Call me if something happens.”

After leaving the apartment complex, Agnes went to a small private restaurant.

A server led her into a private room. A man was already waiting inside.

When he saw her, he stood up at once. His deep eyes were full of warmth and quiet excitement.

He pulled out a chair for her like a gentleman. “Agnes, you’re here. It’s been a long time.”

Agnes smiled and sat down. “Thank you. It has been a while, Neal.”

Since the incident at university, they hadn’t been in tough much.

Neal could tell how much Raymond cared about Agnes. And in Agnes’s heart, Raymond had always been

there.

Later, he heard that Raymond had even sent Hillary to the psychiatric hospital in Montara.

He thought the two must have gotten back together.

Because of that, Neal never took the final step forward. He kept his feelings to himself.
