Chapter 159 Still Not Over Her

Neal said, “Honestly there were a lot of times I wanted to ask you out To try those little hidden restaura together.”

He almost told how much he missed me but allowed the words. What right did he have to say that?

Agnes smiled. “Sure. We can go next time.”

Neal blinked, surprised. “Really? Raymond would mind about this.”

At the mention of Raymond, Agnes’s expression shifted. The smile on her face slowly faded.

She changed the subject with a calm voice. “Neal, I came to see you today about Harvey. What did you find?”

Neal felt a small spark of excitement. He had noticed something off in her expression just now.

Did something happen between her and Raymond?

He said, “Even if you hadn’t come, I was going to find you. I did find something, and it’s pretty shocking.”

Agnes frowned slightly. “What is it?”

Neal said, “Harvey built a life in Montara. He has a young son there. But before he moved, he had another family. A daughter.”

He paused, then added, “After he left, that daughter was adopted by someone else. And you know her.”

Agnes thought for a moment. Then something clicked. She had seen Harvey and Hillary together before. clicked.

Her eyes narrowed. “That daughter is Hillary?”

Neal looked at her with surprise. “Yes. That’s right.”

Agnes felt her chest tighten. So Hillary and Harvey were father and daughter.

Neal explained softly, “Don’t get me wrong. I’m just worried about you. Hillary keeps targeting you because of Raymond. Her father has influence in Montara. He even hired individuals to attack you in the past. This is way beyond just causing trouble.

He looked at her seriously.

“Agnes, I’m really worried about your safety. Is Paymond really worth risking your life for? He always Hillary’s side. Has he ever thought about how you feel?”

Agnes stayed quiet, eyes lowered.

She couldn’t figure Raymond out either.

“I know you still have feelings for him. If being in that circle makes you unhappy, maybe it’s time to step out. Don’t force yourself to stay.”

He hesitated, then looked at her with steady, sincere eyes.

“If you’re willing, I–I can be the one who protects you. Someone you can rely on.

“I’m not saying these words on impulse. I’m serious.

“Ever since I first met you at the university, I’ve felt this way. I just kept missing my chance.”

He took a breath. “I don’t want to see you hurt anymore. And I don’t want to keep waiting. Can you give m a chance?”

Agnes slowly raised her head. There was a flash of surprise in her eyes.

She met his sincere gaze and thought for a long moment before speaking softly.

“Neal, I didn’t expect this. And I’m really touched. You’re kind. Thoughtful. You’ve helped me so much.

“I truly value our friendship.

“I hope we can keep things the way they are now–supporting each other, staying by each other’s side.

“I still have a lot to deal with right now. I don’t have the time or space for a relationship. I’m sorry.” Neal felt the fire burning bright inside him quietly dim. A soft sadness spread through his chest.

But he still kept a gentle smile.

After a moment, he said, “You don’t have to apologize. I understand. And I respect your choice.

“I just want you to know no matter what, I’ll always stand behind you.
