Chapter 267 Perfect Timing
“Think about your daughter. Think about Ethan.
“We’re on the same boat. We have to work together. No hidden agendas.
“You understand what I mean, Rebecca?”
At the mention of her daughter, Rebecca’s eyes reddened slightly. Of course, she understood.
“I know. I’ll be careful.”
Duncan nodded in satisfaction and patted her shoulder.
His gaze brushed over her thin nightgown, his throat tightening for a second.
“Get some rest.”
He quickly composed himself and headed back to his room.
At the corner of the hallway, Monica stood there, her expression cold.
She had seen everything: Duncan going to Rebecca, their conversation, the subtle closeness between th
A sneer curled on her lips. Of course. A woman who can get along with Agnes has be the same kind.
Shameless.
I just put Rebecca in her place yesterday, and now the woman ran straight to Duncan to complain.
She’s even dressed like that, trying to tempt him.
Monica let out a cold laugh. Even if I can’t deal with Agnes, I can definitely deal with this nobody.
The next day, while Duncan was out, Monica called Rebecca into her room.
She sat on the balcony, drinking coffee with practiced elegance.
Gone was the arrogance from yesterday. She suddenly acted warm, inviting Rebecca to sit and join her.
Rebecca didn’t trust her at all. She stayed where she was.
“Ms. Hale, if you have something to say, just say it. Duncan’s not here. There’s no need for this.”
Monica let out a soft snort.
“Duncan? Since when do you get to call him that? When did you two get so close”
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going.”
Rebecca turned to leave.
At that moment, a maid’s voice came from the door. “Mr. Duncan, you’re back.”
Monica, who had just been acting high and mighty, suddenly dropped to the floor and burst into tears.
“Ms. Foster, I just got here! I didn’t know the rules. I didn’t mean to…”
Duncan walked into the living room and saw Monica collapsed on the floor, crying miserably.
His brows furrowed as he stepped forward and helped her up.
“Monica, are you okay? What happened?”
Then he turned and saw Rebecca, covered in coffee stains, his frown deepening.
“What is going on here?”
Monica clung tightly to him, her voice trembling as she sobbed, “Duncan, it’s my fault. I accidentally spilled the coffee.
“I was going to clean it up, but…Ms. Foster scolded me for not knowing my place…
“She said that’s a maid’s job, told me I was overstepping, and said I wasn’t raised properly…”
As she spoke, she glanced at Duncan. Seeing the concern on his face, she cried even harder.
“Duncan, even though I grew up in a wealthy family, was raised with good manners.
“My parents taught me to treat everyone well. I’ve never mistreated staff or looked down on them…”
Her shoulders shook as she sobbed.
“Ms. Foster went too far. She said she was here first, that everyone here had to follow her rules.
“She even said… that servants are beneath us…”
Rebecca’s eyes were red, tears dripping silently onto the floor.
But from start to finish, she didn’t say a word in her defense.
The staff stood off to the side, too afraid to speak. Monica had already shot them a warning look.
They had seen enough to know she wasn’t someone to cross.
Duncan let out a quiet breath, irritation flickering in his chest.
Women are such a pain. They like to blow small things out of proportion
Still, he kept his voice gentle.
“Monica, next time just let the staff handle it.”
He lifted her delicate wrist lightly.
“These hands are too pretty for that kind of work.”
Monica nodded obediently in his arms, her voice soft.
“Okay, Duncan. I’ll listen to whatever you say.”
Behind them, the staff quickly moved in to clean up the mess.
Duncan held Monica and turned to Rebecca.
“You should go clean up too. And… watch your behavior from now on.”
Rebecca said nothing, just gave a small nod. The frustration and anger in her chest felt like a bone stuck her throat, impossible to swallow or spit out.
If not for her daughter still in Agnes’s hands and Ethan lying in that cold hospital bed, she would’ve left this place immediately, gone somewhere no one knew her, and started over.
But the thought of Agnes brought the hatred surging back.
Every rise and fall in her life traced back to that woman.
She had once believed Agnes was her savior.
Instead, she turned out to be something she could never escape, a shadow that would haunt her forever.
Rebecca returned to her room. The moment she stepped inside, her expression changed.
The room was in complete disarray.
Her makeup and perfume were smashed across the vanity.
The closet doors hung open, and inside, her expensive clothes and designer bags had been shredded.
It looked like the place had been ransacked.
Rebecca clenched her fists. She didn’t need to guess who did it.
Everything here had been given to her by Duncan after she moved in.
Remembering Monica’s humiliation earlier, she didn’t call anyone.
She quietly gathered everything into trash bags and cleaned the room berself
Deep down she swore that one day, Monica would pay for this.
She changed out of her stained clothes, took a shower, and slipped into a white silk nightgown.
The fabric was thin, her damp hair falling over her shoulders, the faint scent of body wash lingering around her.
A knock came at the door.
She opened it and saw Duncan standing there, alone.
