Chapter 269 Negotiation
Then they heard the servants say respectfully, “Ms. Hale, you’re up—”
Before they could finish, a long “shhh” cut them off.
The footsteps outside suddenly turned hurried, retreating back the way they came.
Rebecca kept eating, smiling to herself without even looking up, her voice bright and loud.
“Ms. Hale, since you’re already up, come eat breakfast with me.”
After a long pause, Monica’s trembling voice came from the staircase.
“No. I’m not really hungry. I need to find Duncan.”
Rebecca said, “Duncan went out. Right now, it’s just you and me in the house. Heh.”
Monica panicked. Last night, she’d clung to Duncan and forced him to stay with her the whole time.
When she woke up this morning and didn’t see him beside her, she rushed out to look for him.
The memory of Rebecca losing it and grabbing her by the throat yesterday still made her shiver.
Rebecca set down her utensils and glanced at Monica, her voice cooling.
“Ms. Hale, do I need to invite you a second time?”
Monica froze for a long moment, then slowly shuffled forward, unwilling as she made her way into the living room and sat down.
The servants brought breakfast and stood neatly to the side.
Rebecca waved her hand at them and said,
“You can all leave. This doesn’t concern you. Ms. Hale and I have some heart-to-heart things to talk about.”
Monica tensed instantly and called out, “What are you doing? Why are you sending them all away?”
Rebecca said, “Oh, what are you so scared of, Ms. Hale? Where did all that attitude you had yesterday go?
“Didn’t you say there’s a difference in status between us, that you own me? Haha…”
As she spoke, Rebecca deliberately dragged her knife and fork hard against the plate, making a harsh scraping sound.
The noise echoed sharply through the huge villa, painfully grating.
Clang.
Suddenly, the knife in Rebecca’s hand dropped to the floor.
“Oh. How careless of me.”
Rebecca bent down as if to pick it up.
The next second, she frowned and let out a soft groan.
“Ah, my back hurts. You pulled me too hard yesterday. I think you hurt it.”
Rebecca looked at Monica like she was asking for help, her voice sweet.
“Ms. Hale, could you help me pick it up? Please?”
Monica’s face flushed red. She knew Rebecca was doing this on purpose to get back at her.
Furious. That wild woman from the backwoods had actually climbed over her head.
The woman was insane. She even claimed she’d killed people, and Monica didn’t know if it was true. She was genuinely scared.
She didn’t move to pick it up. Instead, she pushed her own set of utensils across the table toward Rebecca.
