Raymond said, "Frank, you're such a..."
Standing off to the side, Agnes finally realized what was going on. Raymond had brought her to see a therapist.
Raymond turned to her, his voice softening.
"Agnes, your emotions are going to be unstable right now. The insomnia is part of it.
"I know some things can't just be settled with a few words."
He held her hand tightly and explained with patience, "I brought you here so you don't carry this alone. Don't feel pressured.
"Frank is my closest friend. I trust him. He's one of the best in the world. He can help you."
Agnes looked a little uneasy.
"I-I don't think I'm ready..."
Frank cut in with a light laugh.
"Since when do you need to prepare to see an old friend?"
Then he shook his head like he was hurt.
"Agnes, that's cold. You're going to hurt my feelings saying that.
"It's been so long. Let's just catch up and talk a little.
"Don't be afraid of me. I don't bite.
"And I'm nothing like Raymond. I'm known for being gentle."
Raymond said, "Shaw, come outside with me. We need to talk. I promise I won't hit you."
The two of them traded a few more jokes. Agnes, who had been tense, couldn't help but relax a little.
Raymond patted her back gently.
"I'll be right outside. If he says anything he shouldn't, call me, and I'll come deal with him."
Frank immediately turned to Agnes with an exaggerated, offended look, like he was filing a complaint.
They ended up talking about work and daily life. The conversation stayed light and easy.
After a while, Frank stepped out alone.
He met Raymond's eyes and walked off to the side. Raymond followed.
Frank's expression turned serious. "She looks fine on the surface, but that's exactly what you need to watch out for.
"When someone goes through a major shock and seems too calm, it usually means they're suppressing everything underneath."
Raymond said, "I know. That's why I brought her to you. What do we do next?"
Frank said, "I'll prescribe something mild to help her sleep.
"Then I'll set up an evaluation and regular sessions."
Raymond nodded, worry still lingering in his eyes.
Frank patted his shoulder. "Relax. She'll be fine."
Raymond's voice dropped. "Thanks."
