Eleanor cried as she scrubbed her body over and over with alcohol, rubbing so hard that her skin broke and bled, but she still didn't stop.
It was as if she could wipe away those filthy marks along with her skin and flesh.
Noticing something was off, the nurse cautiously asked if she had run into trouble and whether she wanted help calling the police.
She refused every time.
The next day, Carmen hurried to the hospital in a panic, only to see that Eleanor had already pulled herself together.
Seeing Carmen, Eleanor forced a weak smile. "Caitlin, you're here..."
There was undisguised killing intent in Carmen's eyes.
She gently held Eleanor's hand, suppressing her fury as she asked softly, "Who did this to you? Tell me—what happened?!"
Eleanor still smiled gently. But no matter how hard she tried to hide it, the red and purple bruises covering her body gave her away.
Her voice was calm. "Caitlin, I'm fine. I just... fell last night..."
"A fall would do this much damage?" Carmen pressed. "Eleanor, don't be scared. Tell me what really happened."
But Eleanor remained composed. "I'm really fine. It was dark, and it was raining. I just slipped. Don't worry so much."
She forced a smile, trying to appear relaxed.
She couldn't talk about what happened last night.
If she did, it would stir up a storm in Grandridge.
If the Shaws and the Newtons turned against each other because of her, Carmen would definitely get dragged into it.
Carmen was a high-profile heiress, living under the spotlight. She didn't deserve to be tainted by someone as broken as her.
Besides, Eleanor knew Carmen too well. If Carmen found out the truth, someone might end up dead.
Eleanor brushed it off like nothing was wrong, flashing a playful smile. "I really just fell. Trust me."
In the end, she didn't tell Carmen anything.
Still uneasy, Carmen studied Eleanor's evasive gaze. "Really?"
Eleanor nodded firmly. "Yeah, really! When have I ever lied to you?"
She leaned in, wrapping her arm around Carmen's, acting spoiled.
"Caitlin, I'm a little hungry... Can you go buy that crab congee we love? Let's eat together, okay?"
Seeing Carmen still hesitant, she pouted and turned slightly away. "I'm already hurt, and you're still mad at me."
Only then did Carmen soften. "Don't lie to me, Eleanor."
Eleanor turned back with a smile. "Of course not. Hurry, I'm starving."
Carmen finally relaxed, tapping her nose lightly. "Little glutton. You fall like that and still think about food. Stay here. I'll go get it."
