The word “beggar” hung in the air like a slap. Theron’s face went from red to a sickly shade of purple. The veins in his neck bulged.

“You ungrateful wretch!” Theron roared. Spittle flew from his mouth. “I gave you life! You dare call me a beggar?”

He took a step toward me, his hands curled into claws.

“You should have died in that ambush!” he screamed, his voice cracking with pure malice. “The Rogues should have torn your throat out! You are nothing but a broken waste of space!”

The air in the room dropped ten degrees. Before I could even react, a blur of motion swept past my wheelchair.

The sound of fist meeting bone was loud.

Theron stumbled backward. He crashed into the wall, clutching his jaw. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. He looked up, stunned.

Marcus stood between us. His fist was still raised. “Watch your tongue,” Marcus said. His voice was low, like a growl. “Disrespect the Alpha again, and I will break your jaw.”

Theron stared at Marcus, then at me. “You… you let your dog hit your father?”

Theron shook his head frantically. Terror replaced his anger.

“Get out,” I commanded. “Before I change my mind.”

Theron scrambled to his feet. He didn’t look back. He practically ran out the door, clutching his bruising face.

The room went quiet. But Ronan didn’t leave.

He stood by the window. He watched his father flee, then slowly turned to face me. His expression shifted. The arrogance vanished. In its place was a look of deep, pained sorrow.

“Theo,” Ronan said softly. He took a tentative step forward. “I didn’t know he would say those things. That was too far.”

I watched him without blinking.

“I know I’ve been difficult,” Ronan continued, his voice trembling slightly. “But you have to understand. I was trying to push you. It was tough love. I wanted you to fight back, to be the brother I used to look up to.”

He reached out a hand. “We are blood, Theo. We are the only brothers we have. I just want us to be a family again.”

I took a deep breath. The scent hit me instantly. It was sour. Acrid.

It was the smell of a liar.

*He thinks we are stupid,* Logan laughed in my head. *Rip his throat out.*

“Stop acting,” I said flatly. “It’s embarrassing.”

Ronan froze. His hand dropped. “What?”

“I can smell the lies on you, Ronan,” I said. “You smell like rotting garbage.”

Ronan’s face hardened. The sadness evaporated instantly.

“I am trying to make peace here,” he snapped.

I pointed to the door.

“Get out, Ronan. Go play businessman in the human world. You have no place here.”

Ronan’s face twisted into a mask of pure hatred. He didn’t say another word. He spun on his heel and stormed out, slamming the door so hard the frame rattled.

I marched out of the hospital, my blood boiling. I threw myself into the back seat of the black sedan waiting at the curb.

Theron was already there. He was pressing an ice pack to his jaw. He winced as I slammed

the car door.

“Well?” Theron asked, his voice muffled by the ice. “Did you get anywhere with him?”

“No,” I spat. “He knows everything. He knows Gideon cut me off.”

Theron slammed his free hand against the leather seat. “Damn it! We need money, Ronan. Without funds, we can’t buy loyalty. The elders won’t support us if our pockets are empty.”

“He humiliated us,” I muttered, staring out the tinted window at the hospital building. “He treated us like beggars.”

The driver started the engine, but I didn’t give him a destination yet. My mind was racing. We were cornered.

“We can’t let him recover,” I said quietly.

“The engagement ceremony is coming up,” I said. “The Stone family and the Crimson family will all be there. It’s the perfect stage.”

“To do what?” Theron asked nervously.

“To stir up chaos,” I said. “I can use the cousins. They have been suppressed for years. I can whisper in their ears. Make them question a crippled King.”

“That’s not enough,” Theron said, shaking his head. “As long as he gets stronger, talk won’t stop him.”

“You’re right,” I agreed. My gaze drifted up to the window of Theodore’s hospital room. “The problem isn’t Theodore. The problem is the healer.”

“Amelia Stone,” Theron whispered.
