Chapter 107: Caleb Feels Like a Fool

Chapter 107: Caleb Feels Like a Fool

(Caleb’s POV)

Darkness. It was heavy and suffocating, like being buried under ten feet of wet earth. I couldn’t move a finger. I couldn’t open my eyes. My body felt like a stone slab, utterly disconnected from my mind.

But my hearing was terrifyingly sharp.

Every beep of the heart monitor was a hammer blow. And then, there was her voice. Celine’s voice. It wasn’t the sweet, melodic tone she used when begging for a new car or a designer dress. It was sharp, cold, and dripping with venom.

You had one job, Caleb. One job,” she hissed.

I felt the mattress dip as she sat on the edge of the bed.

All

you

had to do was make sure Amelia was dead, and you couldn’t even do that.

Her words stabbed into my consciousness like ice picks. There was no sadness in her tone. No worry for her brother lying in a coma. There was only the annoyance of an investor who had lost money on a bad bet.

I didn’t spend twenty years perfecting my smile and starving myself into these dresses just to watch you fumble at the oneyard line,. Celine continued.

She let out a harsh, mocking laugh.

You and Mom always thought I was just a sweet, naive girl. Idiots. I saw through Mom and Dad’s little game years ago. I learned from Aunt Lyra. I studied every pack etiquette rule. I learned which fork to use and how to curtsy to an Alpha King. I never cared about the pack’s stupid problems. I just wanted to be a Luna of a High Pack.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to sit up and shake her. But I was frozen.

I don’t give a damn about Stone River Botanicals,” she spat. I just want the wealth. I want the status. But now, because you failed, I’ve upset Rhys. Do you know how hard it is to find a billionaire Alpha heir? And now he won’t even look at me.

She leaned closer. I could feel her breath on my face. It didn’t feel warm.

You’re so much more useful when you’re quiet, Caleb, she whispered, her voice chilling me

to the bone. At least now you can’t make things worse.

My mind reeled. The coldness spread through my spirit.

*Is this the sister I protected?*

Inside my head, my wolf, Noah, let out a low, mournful howl. It was a sound of pure betrayal.

She was a viper. A snake I had held to my chest.

Memories flashed in the darkness. Amelia’s face, desperate and pleading. She had tried to warn me. She had told me Celine was manipulating us.

*She is a liar, Caleb! Open your eyes!* Amelia had screamed that day.

And what did I do? I slapped her. I pushed my own sister away to protect this monster.

The guilt was a physical pain, sharper than the crash that put me here. Celine had lived like a princess for twenty years, sheltered by our mother’s crimes. Amelia had suffered in the mud and cold of Meadow Brook. And I had helped keep her there.

I felt like the biggest fool in the world.

*

*Let me wake up, I prayed to the Moon Goddess. *Please. Let me wake up so I can fix this.*

But the darkness just pressed down harder. It felt like a punishment. I was forced to listen, to understand the depth of my sin, unable to do anything but suffer.

(Ethan’s POV)

The hospital corridor was quiet, smelling of antiseptic and old coffee. I walked toward the VIP wing, my footsteps echoing on the tile.

The elevator doors at the end of the hall slid open. Livia stepped out. She looked terrible. Her usually perfect hair was messy, and there were deep lines etched around her mouth.

Mom,I said, stopping in front of her. I was coming to check on Caleb.

Livia let out a long, shuddering sigh. She leaned against the wall for a moment, looking frail.

He is the same,” she said, her voice hollow. Celine is in there with him now.

She rubbed her temples.

I have to go home, Ethan. I can’t look at those machines anymore today. She looked up at me, her eyes dim. This power struggleit’s too much. I feel like I’m drowning. I need to rest.

Go,I said, nodding. I’ll sit with him for a bit.

She patted my arm weakly and stepped into the elevator. I watched the doors close, hiding her defeated face.

I turned and walked toward Caleb’s room.

(Celine’s POV)

I paced the small room, my heels clicking softly.

Shadow Healer,I muttered to myself.

The rumor was annoying. If Amelia really was this Lily, this miracle worker, she might actually fix Theodore Crimson.

I stopped in front of the mirror and checked my reflection. My skin was flawless. My eyes were bright.

It doesn’t matter,I whispered.

I smoothed my dress over my hips.

Men are simple creatures,” I told my reflection. A flash of thigh, a stroke to their ego, and they’ll sign over their souls.

If Amelia fixed Theodore, fine. I would just take him from her. A crippled Alpha or a healed one, they all wanted the same thing in the end. A beautiful, obedient woman on their arm. I could be that. I could be whatever they wanted.

I grabbed a bottle of imported water from the side table and took a sip. Then, I reached into my Chanel handbag.

I pulled out a tube of lipstick. It looked like a standard shade of red. I popped the cap. I twisted the base.

Instead of wax color, a thin, silver needle emerged.

I walked back to the bed. Caleb looked peaceful. Too peaceful. The doctors said his brain activity was fluctuating. That was dangerous. If he woke up, he might start talking. He might have heard things.

Shh, Caleb,I cooed.

I found the IV port on his arm.

You’re so much more manageable when you’re quiet,” I said softly. Don’t look at me like that -I’m doing us both a favor. You get your beauty sleep, and I get to clean up your mess without you whining.

I pressed the plunger. The clear liquid disappeared into his vein. It was a potent nerve suppressant. It wouldn’t kill him, but it would ensure his comalasted a good while longer.

Just as the last drop went in, I saw his index finger twitch.

It was a tiny movement. A spasm.

My heart skipped a beat.

*Click.*

The door handle turned.

I yanked the needle out. In one fluid motion, I dropped the lipstick back into my open bag just as the door swung open.

Ethan stood there. He looked tired, his tie loosened.

Jesus, Ethan!I gasped, pressing a hand to my chest. You scared the hell out of me. Ever heard of knocking? I was just adjusting his pillows.

Ethan didn’t answer immediately. His dark eyes flicked from my face to my open handbag sitting on the chair. The gold clasp glinted under the fluorescent lights.

He frowned. What were you doing?

I saw suspicion in his gaze. He was wondering what I had dropped in there so quickly.

I kept my face perfectly calm. I reached out and snapped the bag shut, swinging it over my shoulder casually.

What? Looking for a mint? Or are you just admiring my new Chanel?I asked, raising an eyebrow.

I smiled and tilting my head.

Why are you here so late, anyway? I told Mom I had everything under control.
