In the remote territory of the Meadow Brook Pack, the afternoon sun cast long shadows over the rugged terrain. Ethan Stone sat in the driver’s seat of his dusty SUV, his expression weary as he stared out the
window.
Outside, the werewolves who had once lived alongside him on this very land were bustling with excitement. They carried luggage and chatted animatedly, lining up to board several luxury coaches parked by the roadside.
Half an hour ago, these buses had arrived unexpectedly at the pack entrance. To Ethan’s shock, the person leading the convoy was none other than Paul, the head butler of the Stone River Pack House.
Ethan quickly realized the purpose of this fleet. These vehicles were sent specifically to transport these lower–ranking wolves to Northgate City for Amelia’s grand birthday banquet.
Watching everyone happily stowing their bags, a pang of jealousy and isolation struck Ethan hard. He opened his car door and stepped out, standing before the convoy.
He tried to stop a few passing wolves, lowering his pride to ask if they could take him along. However, they simply walked past him, their eyes averting as if he were invisible.
Butler Paul noticed the commotion and walked over, his demeanor polite but unmistakably distant.
“Young Master Ethan, please dispel this thought,” Paul said, his voice calm but firm. “With your current status, appearing there would only spoil Alpha Amelia’s mood.”
Ethan opened his mouth to argue, but the words died in his throat. His face flushed with humiliation.
Defeated, he turned around and walked back to his SUV like a lost soul. He slammed the door shut, isolating himself from the joyous atmosphere outside.
Just as he picked up his phone, the screen lit up with a call from his younger brother, Caleb.
“Ethan, where is Mom?” Caleb’s anxious voice came through the speakers. “I haven’t heard from her.”
Ethan froze for a second. He hadn’t seen Livia since yesterday.
He quickly masked his panic, his voice taking on a tone of annoyance. “I didn’t want to return to Northgate City. We had a huge argument about it.”
He paused, glancing at his reflection in the rearview mirror. “She’s probably just ‘in a bad mood and hiding somewhere to cool off. You know how she is.”
Deep down, Ethan didn’t truly care about his mother’s safety. He felt she was merely pulling a stunt to gain
attention, as she often did.

Caleb sounded disappointed on the other end. “Please, just come back. Amelia’s birthday is in two days.”
Ethan sighed heavily, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. “Fine. I’ll drive back to the city today.”
His voice turned bitter. “But don’t expect me to be welcome. The wolves here won’t even look at me. As a marginalized former heir, I don’t have the qualification to officially attend that banquet.”
After hanging up, Ethan took one last look at the territory where he had been forced to live in exile. Confirming that not a single vehicle would offer him a ride, he started his engine.
With a heart full of resentment, he stepped on the gas and drove away alone, leaving the celebration convoy behind.
On one of the coaches speeding toward the city, Rowan Calder watched Ethan’s SUV disappear into the
distance.
“Hmph,” Rowan scoffed, crossing his arms. “That arrogant boy is still daydreaming.”
Sitting next to him, Dr. Iris Morris smiled gently. “Don’t waste your energy on him, Rowan. Let’s talk about something pleasant. Did you finish your gift for Amelia?”
Rowan scratched his head, his expression softening. “I’ve taught her all the herbal knowledge I possess. I just hope she can rely on herself in the future.”
He reached into his bag and pulled out a handcrafted leather roll. “So, I made this for her. It’s a custom
case for her healing needles.”
Dr. Iris Morris nodded in approval and took out a small, exquisite tube. “And I prepared a pure natural herbal lip balm. Now that she is the Pack Alpha, she needs to take care of her appearance.”
The two elders shared a knowing smile.
“They aren’t expensive gifts,” Iris murmured, looking out at the passing scenery. “But Amelia values sentiment over wealth. She will love them.”
“She really is special,” Rowan agreed. “Despite her terrifying talent as a healer and her identity as the Shadow King, she has kept a pure heart. She is the finest young werewolf I have ever seen.”
Night fell, wrapping the world in darkness.
In a dilapidated cattle shed located in a remote settlement for rogue wolves, the air was thick with the smell of mold and decay.
Livia lay curled up in a corner, wrapped in a damp, foul–smelling quilt. She shivered uncontrollably, her expensive clothes now torn and dirty.
A man walked in, talking loudly on his phone. He approached Livia and kicked her hard in the ribs.
“Look at you,” he sneered, ending his call. “The high and mighty Luna, now looking like a stray dog.”
Livia groaned but didn’t dare speak.

“Don’t worry,” the man spat, crouching down. “We’ll let you go in a couple of days.”

He roughly grabbed her hair, forcing her head up to check her face. Seeing she was alive and too weak to resist, he scoffed and released her, letting her head hit the dirty straw.
Finding the situation boring, he turned and walked out of the shed.
Livia waited until his footsteps faded away. Fighting through the intense pain in her body, she struggled to
sit up.
As she adjusted her ragged clothes, her hand brushed against the wooden post she was chained to. To
her surprise, the wood felt soft and spongy.
It was rotting from the dampness.
A spark of hope ignited in her eyes, replacing the arrogance that used to reside there. This was her
chance.
She gritted her teeth, grabbed the chain, and pulled with all the strength she had left.
With a sickening crack, the rotten wood gave way. The chain came loose.
Livia didn’t hesitate. Her mind screamed only one command: Run!
She scrambled out of the shed and into the night.
Shortly after Livia’s frantic escape, the kidnapper stood by the window of a nearby shack, watching her
fleeing figure.
He calmly dialed a number.
“It’s done,” he reported. “I let the woman escape as planned. Barring any accidents, she will be back in Northgate City by tomorrow.”
On the other end of the line, Adrian Stone stood by the window of the Stone River Pack House.
“Good,” Adrian replied coldly. “Her wretched return at the birthday banquet will be the perfect catalyst. It will drive the wedge between her and Amelia even deeper.”
He hung up the phone, his expression complex as he looked out at the moonlight.
“I’m sorry, Livia,” he whispered to the empty room.
He tried to convince himself that this was necessary. For the stability of the family and his own power, she would surely understand his cruelty.
Livia had no idea she was a pawn in a larger game. She ran blindly through the dark wilderness, her lungs burning.
She didn’t know how long she had been running. She stumbled and fell countless times, scraping her hands and knees, but terror kept her moving.
She couldn’t stop. If that man caught her, she was dead.
