“Mom…” Caleb mumbled, his voice thick and slurred.

He was not fully awake yet. The heavy sedatives Adrian had given him still clouded his mind. His eyes

were unfocused and bleary as he tried to sit up.

“What do you mean?” he asked, rubbing his temples. “What do you mean she almost died?”

Amelia stared down at him. Her sapphire eyes were cold and unyielding.

*He is pathetic,* Ava snorted in Amelia’s mind. The silver wolf paced with agitation. *He sleeps while his mother faces death. Stupid pup.*

Amelia did not bother to explain. She had no patience for his confusion or his ignorance.

“See for yourself,” she said simply. Her voice was devoid of any warmth.

She turned on her heel and walked out of the bedroom.

Caleb felt a chill run down his spine. A terrible feeling of dread washed over him. The fog in his brain

began to clear, replaced by a rising panic.

He scrambled out of bed. He stumbled, nearly falling over his own feet. He didn’t stop to put on his shoes.

He ran into the hallway, his bare feet slapping against the cold floor. He chased after Amelia into the living

room.

The sight that greeted him made him freeze in his tracks.

It was a scene of absolute chaos.

His mother, Livia, was sitting on the floor near the doorway. She looked like a ghost. Her face was pale,

drained of all color. Her eyes were wide and empty, staring at nothing.

Standing near her was a stranger. A man dressed in black tactical gear. He radiated a dangerous aura.

Next to him was a large man, bound with ropes, kneeling in defeat.

And then there was his father.

Adrian lay on the floor. He was clutching his shoulder. Blood seeped through his fingers, staining his expensive shirt. His face was as white as paper.

Caleb felt a violent shiver go through his body.

He rushed to Livia’s side. He dropped to his knees.

“Mom! What happened?” he cried out. His voice was shaking uncontrollably. “Why is Dad hurt? Who are

He looked around frantically. His mind couldn’t process the violence.

Livia slowly lifted her heavy eyelids. She looked at her son. There was no light in her eyes.

She did not answer his frantic questions.

“Did you know?” she asked softly. Her voice trembled.

Caleb blinked, confused. “Know what?”

“Did you know about your father’s plan?” Livia suddenly screamed. She grabbed Caleb’s arm. Her fingers

dug into his flesh. “Did you know he hired someone to kill me tonight?”

Caleb’s eyes widened in horror. He pulled back slightly.

He shook his head violently. “No! Mom, no! I swear! I didn’t know anything! I was asleep!”

Livia stared into his eyes. She searched for any sign of a lie.

She saw only genuine terror.

She let go of his arm. Her strength left her body. She slumped against the wall like a puppet with cut

strings.

A bitter laugh escaped her lips. Tears streamed down her face.

“He really wanted me dead,” she sobbed. “My mate… he actually tried to kill me.”

She looked up at Amelia. Her expression was one of total defeat.

“You were right,” Livia whispered. “He is a monster.”

Amelia looked down at the broken woman. Her face remained impassive.

“I told you,” Amelia said calmly. “I don’t use dirty tactics. I don’t need to frame him.”

Caleb stood up. His shock was replaced by a surge of anger.

He turned toward Adrian. He wanted answers.

“Dad!” he shouted. He took a step toward his father.

Amelia moved quickly. She stepped in his path, blocking him.

“Save your energy,” she said. “We wait for Grandfather.”

She pointed at the phone in Caleb’s hand.

“Call Ethan,” she ordered. “Tell him to come home immediately. We are having a family reunion.”

Amelia turned to Adrian. The Alpha groaned in pain.

She crouched down beside him. She grabbed the hem of his expensive shirt.

She wrapped it around his bleeding shoulder. She pulled the knot tight. Brutally tight.

Adrian howled in pain.

“Quiet,” Amelia hissed. Her eyes were like ice. “You don’t get to die yet. You have to survive until Grandfather gets here. You have to face your judgment.”

Amelia stood up and wiped her hands. She walked over to Theodore.

The Alpha King sat in his wheelchair. He watched her with glowing golden eyes.

“Good work,” he said softly. His voice was filled with pride.

He looked at Silas. “Your subordinate is skilled. He took down a professional assassin alone.”

Amelia nodded. “Silas is the best. He is my shadow. Without him, there is no Shadow organization.”

Ten minutes passed in tense silence.

The sound of engines broke the quiet. Car doors slammed outside.

Footsteps hurried toward the entrance.

Alpha Alaric stormed into the room. Jaxon and Seraphina followed close behind him.

“Explain yourself, Adrian!”

Amelia stepped forward. She crossed her arms over her chest.

“He has two choices,” Amelia said calmly.
