Lyra’s face went instantly pale. It was as if she had been struck by an invisible bolt of lightning.

She stared at me with wide, disbelief–filled eyes. The arrogance she usually wore like a second skin

vanished in a heartbeat.

“What?” she stammered, her voice trembling uncontrollably. “You say Adrian is going to be sent to the

Council prison? What is going on?”

I looked at her terrified expression. A cold, mocking smile curled the corners of my lips.

“Don’t play dumb, Aunt Lyra,” I said, my voice dripping with ice. “You are not an innocent bystander. You

must have known about the dirty deeds he committed to seize power.”

Lyra’s heart seemed to sink. I could see the realization dawning on her. She knew Adrian’s plan had failed

completely.

Her legs went weak. She swayed, nearly falling to the floor.

But she caught herself. She tried to muster the dignity of an elder to suppress me. She puffed out her

chest, though her eyes betrayed her fear.

“You possess no authority here,” she hissed. “Just because Alaric isn’t here right now, you think you can do

whatever you want in the Pack House?”

“Since Grandfather has left,” I replied calmly, “I am the one who makes the decisions here.”

I took a slow step toward her. The sound of my heel clicking on the floor echoed in the silent hall.

“Do you really think,” I asked softly, “that you can still live peacefully in the Stone River Pack after

everything that has happened?”

Her jaw dropped.

“Guards!” I commanded sharply. “Bring Adrian here.”

Moments later, the heavy doors opened. Two strong warriors dragged Adrian into the room.

He looked nothing like an Alpha. His clothes were torn, and his hair was a mess. He stumbled as they

threw him to the floor before me.

I didn’t waste time on pleasantries. I cut straight to the heart of the matter.

“Did Lyra know you hired a hitman to murder your mate?” I asked coldly.

Adrian’s face lost every drop of blood. He looked like a corpse. He scrambled backward, looking around in

a blind panic.

“I want to see Father!” he shouted, his voice cracking. “Where is Alpha Alaric? I demand to see him!”

I looked down at him without a shred of pity. I ruthlessly shattered his last delusion.

“Grandfather has already gone to the Meadow Brook Pack to retire,” I informed him. “He has completely abandoned you, his fallen son.”

Adrian looked as if he had been struck by thunder. He froze.

“No…” he whispered. “That’s impossible.”

He couldn’t believe he had been discarded by the family. The reality crashed down on him.

“Father wouldn’t leave me!” he wailed. Despair and unwillingness filled his voice. He began to cry, loud,

ugly sobs.

I watched him with a blank expression.

Seeing that I was unmoved, Adrian crawled toward me. He grabbed at the hem of my pants, but I stepped

back.

“Amelia, please!” he begged. “Give me one last chance. Livia will forgive me. She has to! We have been together for so long. She will consider our past feelings!”

He was rambling now, desperate to find a lifeline.

“I was just confused!” he cried. “It was a moment of madness! It was Griffin! He instigated me! He

bewitched me!”

Inside my mind, Ava let out a low, disgusted growl.

*This male is a disgrace to all Alphas,* she snarled. *He smells of betrayal and cowardice. He makes me

sick.*

I soothed her gently.

“You think she will forgive you?” I asked. “Let’s find out.”

I pulled out my phone. I decided to make him give up hope completely.

I dialed Livia’s number and pressed the speaker button.

“Mom,” I said when the line connected. “I’m helping Adrian ask you something. He wants to know if he can

get your forgiveness.”

There was a split second of silence.

“Get lost!” Livia’s roar exploded from the phone, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear. The anger in her voice was palpable. “I will never in my life forgive that beast who tried to kill his mate!”

“She knew!” Adrian screamed, pointing a shaking finger at his sister. “She is lying! She not only knew, but she also suggested I use the Drake family’s intelligence network to plead for mercy!”

Lyra gasped. “You liar!”

“I’m not lying!” Adrian bellowed. “She even encouraged me to get rid of Alpha Alaric along with everyone else! She said as long as that old stubborn fool was alive, we would never truly control the family!”

He laughed manically.

“You are just a pathetic wretch that no one wants!”

Lyra broke down completely. Her composure shattered. She threw herself at him, clawing at his face.

“You are a curse!” she screamed, tearing at his clothes. “You are a useless idiot! You harmed me! You made me offend the Drake family and Amelia!”

They rolled on the floor, wrestling like animals.

“You have no ability!” Adrian shouted back, grabbing her hair. “You only know how to survive by clinging to

men! You are nothing without us!”
