I almost laughed.

“I’m not Griffin,” I said, my voice cool. “I don’t need someone else to fix what I’ve broken. And I didn’t break

this.”

He was quiet.

“If you’re going to Meadow Brook,” I continued, “then follow through. Don’t turn back halfway.” I kept my

tone flat. “This will mark the end of whatever remained between us. You understand that.”

“I understand,” he said.

“Before I go – can I come to the East House? Just to see you both. Even for an hour.”

I thought about Seraphina upstairs. The shadows under her eyes. The way she’d been holding herself

together through sheer will all night.

Having Ethan there might give her something else to focus on.

“Come,” I said. “But behave yourself.”

I hung up, and the thought that had been pressing at the back of my mind came forward all at once.
