“Explain.”

Theodore leaned back slightly.

“Someone wanted to use Mason to get rid of you,” he said. “And then pin it on me. The story they were building was clean – Theodore, still bitter over his mother’s death, finally making his move against the old man who sent his brother away.”

He paused.

“I needed Mason close enough to watch. And I needed whoever was pulling his strings to believe their

plan was still working.”

Gideon’s jaw tightened.

“Victor and Garrett.”

It wasn’t a question.

Theodore confirmed it with a slight nod.

“The two of them together,” he said. “They’ve been coordinating. Mason was their instrument – but he’s also my mother’s creditor. That gave him a reason to be near me that no one would question.”

Gideon’s hands pressed flat against the desk.

“They used me as a pawn,” he said. The words came out very quietly.

“They did,” Theodore said. “And even if Mason had failed, they would have had a contingency. People who want someone dead don’t stop at one attempt.”

Gideon said nothing for a moment.

The silence in the study was complete.

Then Gideon exhaled – a long, slow breath that seemed to cost him something.

“Have you ever,” he said carefully, “suspected me? In your mother’s death?”

He was quiet again for a moment.

“Then everything she predicted came true. One after another. The pack grew. Our position in the Northern Territories became what it is today. Everything she had said would happen – happened.”

Theodore watched his grandfather’s back.

He had never heard him speak like this. Unhurried. Unguarded.

“She told me she would die at forty,” Gideon said. “I didn’t believe her. I didn’t think I needed to. I didn’t

think I even cared.”

His shoulders shifted slightly.

“She died at forty.”

The words landed without drama. That was what made them heavy.

“I didn’t understand what I’d lost until it was already gone,” Gideon said. “The world went flat after that. I couldn’t explain it to anyone. I’m not sure I understood it myself.”

He came back to the desk slowly and stood beside it, not sitting.

He looked at Theodore directly.

His voice dropped.
