Chapter 136

Imema’s POV

I stand alone among the drying racks, my fingers moving through the tangled stems of these wretched herbs. The sun beats down on my back, and I can feel sweat gathering at my hairline, probably ruining my complexion.

This is stupid, menial work! Gathering herbs like some common laborer while they sit in the shade eating as if I

don’t even exist.

A sharp sting rips through my finger. I pull my hand back quickly, a gasp escaping my lips before I can stop it. A thorn has embedded itself into my skin, and tiny beads of blood well up around it.

Tears prick at my eyes, genuinely overwhelming me from the unexpected pain.

I glance toward the table where Talia, Jack, and Robin sit eating. None of them even turn around to check. Oh god, the level of their rudeness is staggering.

Talia’s smile is soft, warm. The kind of simpering look she probably practices in the mirror. Thank you. You should eat more too.

Robin straightens in his seat, practically glowing. Well, I need to eat well. I still have to help Mr. Carter select herbs

this afternoon!

My jaw clenches. I suck on my injured finger, tasting copper, and watch them continue their merriness as if I am not standing right here.

The disrespect is deliberate. These people, with their crumbling clinic and their secondrate skills, think they can treat me like this.

I take a breath and compose my face. Let them see how little their pettiness affects me. I walk toward the table, my steps measured, and hold out my wounded finger with just the right amount of tremble.

II let my voice catch slightly. My finger is hurt. It hurts so much.

Jack barely glances at my hand before letting out a dry laugh. Well, you had better go to the hospital right now.

already be healed.

The sarcasm lands like a slap. I keep my expression wounded, even as my nails dig into my palm. This old man thinks he is clever, or that his reputation means something out here in the middle of nowhere.

Robin looks at my finger with exaggerated curiosity, his head tilted like a confused dog. Ms. Volkov, it is just a tiny scratch on your hand. Does it hurt that much?He blinks at me. I mean, usually when I get knocked around a bit, I do not even shed a tear. How is it that you seem more sensitive than a fiveyearold boy?

My face heats. I wish I could slap the gall out of this cheeky brat! How dare he speak to me like that.

I let my knees slacken just enough to seem weak. I sway slightly, pressing my hand to my forehead. When I speak, I make my voice wan and feeble, but utterly sincere.

They need to understand that I am not like them. I am not built for this kind of labor.

My physical condition is not like that of ordinary geople.

Last week, I accidentally nicked my finger and it bled profusely.I hold up my hand as if the memory pains me. Alpha was so concerned that he insisted I go to the hospital for a thorough checkup.

I see Talia’s fingers pause on her fork. A small victory, but a victory regardless.

I continue, letting my voice gain a fond softness.

Alpha knows that my current situation is a bit special. If I get injured, I tend to bleed really badly. He was so worried I might lose too much blood that he even prepared blood bags in advance.

I let my eyes widen. When I arrived at the hospital, the doctors were in the middle of trying to save another patient who was bleeding super heavily. And they ended up using the blood bag that was originally set aside for me on that patient.

Robin’s eyes have gone wide. Good! Let him see what real care looks like. What real devotion from a real man looks

like.

bleeding? Later on, he had all the medical staff who made that call without asking for permission that night fired.

I look directly at Talia now, letting my words land exactly where I want them. Let her understand exactly how deeply Aires cares for me.

I want her to know what happens to people who cross me, who fail to protect me, who think they can treat me like an inconvenience.

He was just overreacting.I smile, small and helpless, the smile of a woman who is cherished beyond reason. I only cut my finger. Why would I need a blood transfusion for that? But there isn’t a single person in this world who could convince him of that.

The silence that follows is satisfying. I have said enough. She knows now.

She knows that Aires’s protection surrounds me, that his resources are at my disposal, that harming me or even allowing me to come to harm would bring his full fury down upon her head. A woman who could not even keep her own husband now has to answer to him for my safety. The irony is delicious.

smiles.

Ms. Volkov, do not worry. Her voice is gentle, almost kind. I will call Aires to pick you up right now.

I blink. For a moment, I am too stunned to respond. This is not what I expected. She should be angry, hurt, humiliated. Instead, she is offering to call him? It makes no sense. Does she think he will come running for her? Does she think she still has that kind of pull?

A flicker of unease passes through me, quickly suppressed. Perhaps this is her pathetic attempt at contact. She means to use my injury as an excuse to hear his voice, to remind him she exists. The thought makes my stomach tighten.

Ms. Perseus, never mind.I wave my hand dismissively, forcing lightness into my voice. It is really just a small injury. No need to make such a big fuss.

But Talia is already picking up her phone. She does not even look at me as she scrolls through her contacts. The audacity.

A cold smile touches my lips. Let her try, she will only end

up embarrassing herself. Alpha would never pick up her

forgotten obligation. He probably has her number blocked.

The phone rings once. Twice.

Just then, a man’s voice comes through, clear and unmistakable with its tone of concern.

Talia? Is something wrong?
