Chapter 158
Author’s POV
Imema had already caused delays for days at the clinic with her constant troublemaking.
For someone like her, who was apparently dealing with a terminal illness, it was supposed to be a race against time. And yet, she still wasn’t helping speed things up.
Jack had no choice but to assign her the simple task of grinding the herbs. However, she wasted whole days just grinding herbs and still couldn’t even finish a bag of ingredients.
Jack had lived long enough to have seen it all, and he could easily tell what Imema was up to. She was deliberately slacking off, hoping he would get frustrated enough to send her away so she would not have to work
anymore.
But there was no way Jack was falling for that trick. He set her daily work quota. If she did not finish today’s task, she would have to make it up the next day, and so on. He had all the time in the world.

flicking toward Jack as he treated patients in the corner. Her expression was carefully composed, but beneath the surface, something darker stirred.
Her eyes flashed with a cold, venomous glint.
She quietly picked up a small bottle. It contained venom that Jack had extracted from a poisonous snake not long ago. If Jack made a mistake while administering his treatment, it would ruin his reputation and his life. Today was Imema’s last day at the clinic. She was fed up with Jack constantly giving her trouble, so she wanted to cause some trouble for him in return.
Her fingers closed around the bottle. She glanced at Jack, his back turned, focused on his patient. She moved to pour the poison into the medicine bottle on the table.
A cold voice rang out. “What are you doing?!”
Imema jumped, her eyes flashing with a brief moment of panic. Her mental fortitude was strong, and she quickly regained her composure. She turned, her expression one of confusion and innocence.

was just putting the medicine I ground into the bottle” she said, her voice sweet. “What is wrong?”

“Putting it into the bottle?” Talia snatched the vial of poison from Imema’s hand, her voice icy. “Do you not know what is in here?”
Imema feigned looking at it briefly before quickly offering an apologetic expression. “Sorry, I was so focused on grinding the medicine that I did not notice.”
Talia looked at the vial of poison with a cold smile. “Did not notice, or were you planning something else? This vial contains poison extracted just recently. If you had made a mistake, it could have killed someone.”
Not long ago, Jack had extracted the poison and left it on the counter when a patient came in for an urgent consultation. In his haste, he had put it aside and gone to tend to the patient. Talia, having just confirmed a transfer, had noticed Imema acting suspiciously and the gloves Jack left on the table. She had quickly pieced everything together. Imema was trying something devious.
Imema lowered her head and muttered, “Sorry, I really did not know this bottle had poison in it. You know, I am not very good with things. I cannot even tell the difference between herbs and regular plants…”

Imema’s eyes shifted, and then she suddenly dropped to her knees. “It was my mistake. I apologize!” Her voice rose, trembling. “Please, do not take the medicine away because of this… Ms. Perseus, I am begging you!”
Talia’s long lashes fluttered slightly. She did not move to help Imema up.
At that moment, Aires walked into the clinic. He was dressed in a sharp suit, his demeanor cool and composed. He took in the scene quickly, and seeing Imema on her knees, his sharp brows furrowed slightly. He crossed the room in a few strides and reached down to help Imema
“What are you doing?”
Talia watched in silence. The same act again. She could not help but laugh silently. Aires must have come straight from Imema’s complaint. It seemed he was ready to
confront Talia.
But Imema refused to stand. Tears filled her eyes as she sobbed, “Alpha, it is my fault. I made a mistake. I almost poured the wrong medicine into the wrong bottle…” She clutched at his sleeve. “If I have hurt Mr. Carter’s

exactly did Imema do wrong that she had to kneel and apologize?”
Talia had long grown used to Aires’s skepticism and favoritism. She replied flatly, “First of all, I did not make her kneel. She started apologizing and then knelt on her own.” She paused, her voice hardening. “Second…”
She shook the vial of poison. “What exactly did Ms. Volkov do wrong? She almost poured this deadly poison into the medicine she was grinding. This poison was extracted from a venomous snake’s bite. It is so toxic
that a tiny drop could kill someone.” She met Aires’s eyes. “Hurt Mr. Carter’s reputation? Ms. Volkov did not mention that she could have killed a patient.”
Tears fell from Imema’s eyes like a waterfall. She sobbed uncontrollably, looking pitiful. “Sorry, I really did not know. I just saw a bottle and thought it was for the medicine. Who knew Mr. Carter would leave something so dangerous here?” She sniffled, her voice wavering. “Ms. Perseus said that even a normal person who touches this would die. I might have accidentally touched the poison while filling the medicine.” Her eyes widened with feigned horror. “Would I really hurt myself?”

Jack finished treating his patient and walked over. Upon hearing Imema’s words, he sneered, “Oh, so now it is my fault that you grabbed the wrong bottle?”
Talia stepped forward, her voice sharp. “You did not think to check the bottle before using it, did you? Did not you wonder what was inside it? Or did someone sew your
mouth shut?”
A cold laugh welled up inside Talia. Imema’s act was transparent, but Aires’s face remained unreadable.
Imema, her eyes brimming with tears, lowered her head. “It was my mistake.”
Talia’s voice cut through the room. “Have you thought about what your carelessness could mean for the patients
and this clinic?”
She held the vial up. “This is not a game. This is poison! You could have killed someone. And yet here you are, on your knees, making yourself the victim.”
