Aeson’s POV
Gavin’s face twists with rage. His eyes narrow into slits, and he tries to loom over Robin the way he loonts over everyone else. That stare has made plenty of kids cry. Made plenty of kids run away with their tails between their legs.
But Robin isn’t like them. He doesn’t flinch. He doesn’t blink.
“I hit you because you deserve it.” Robin’s voice cuts through the air like a blade. His sharp, beautiful face is completely empty of warmth. “If I hear one more word of badmouthing about Ms. Green from you, you won’t just lose your teeth from laughing. I’ll make sure you lose them for real.”
Gavin freezes. His two buddies freeze. Even I freeze.
r
I’ve seen Gavin push kids around. I’ve seen him shove smaller ones into lockers and laugh while they cried. I’ve never seen anyone stand up to him like this. Not once.
Robin is just standing there. Not yelling. Not threatening. Just stating facts. Like he’s telling Gavin that the sky is blue or that two plus two equals four.
Gavin’s face goes through about five different expressions in two seconds. Confusion. Anger. Fear. Anger again. Something that 21

being the scary ones. They don’t know how to handle someone who isn’t scared back.
Even I can’t look away. I’ve seen Robin do plenty of things. Sneaky things. Manipulative things. But this? This is different.
Robin turns his head and looks at me. His clear eyes flash with something sharp. Contempt. Pure and simple.
“Coward.”
Just one word. That’s all he says.
My whole body shakes. I want to scream at him. I want to tell him that I’m not a coward. I did stand up for my mom. I tried. But I couldn’t win against them. They’re too big. Too strong. And everyone else at my old school turned their backs on me.
୮
I didn’t want to upset Talia, so I never told her what was happening. I went to Diana instead. And do you know what Diana said? She said it was all Talia’s fault. She said if Talia wasn’t such an embarrassment, those mean kids wouldn’t have anything to make fun of.
But before I can get a single word out, Gavin charges.
His eyes are bloodshot now, wild with fury. He’s never been humiliated like this. Never been talked back to. Never been hit and then threatened right after.

Gavin is bigger. Stronger. He’s got weight on his side. But Robin is faster. Smarter. He ducks and weaves and lands punches in places that hurt.
Soon, Gavin is gasping. His swings get wilder, sloppier. He can barely keep up.
“What are you waiting for?” Gavin screams at his two buddies, who are just standing there like statues. “Get in here!”
So they do.
And Robin is just one kid. A five–year–old kid with skinny arms and narrow shoulders. Against three of them, even he can’t hold his own for long.
Gavin’s grin comes back, wide and ugly. “You little brat, I won’t stop until you beg for mercy!”
But before he finishes the word, Robin’s fist crashes into his face
again.
Robin ignores the other two completely. He doesn’t try to block their hits or dodge their kicks. He just lets them come. All his focus is on Gavin. Punching. Scratching. Biting.
He’s like a little beast. A wild animal backed into a corner with nothing left to lose. His eyes are bright and fierce, and something in his core radiates pure tenacity.

weaker. Their arms get shakier.
They’ve never seen anything like this. Nobody fights like this. Nobody just takes the hits and keeps coming. It’s not normal. It’s not right.
They stop hitting him altogether. Now they’re just trying to pull him off Gavin, but they can’t. Robin is like a vice.
Gavin starts crying. Real tears. Snot running down his face. His arrogance is gone, completely washed away.
“I was wrong!” His voice cracks and wobbles. “I know I was wrong! I won’t ever say anything bad about Ms. Green again! Please, please don’t hit me anymore, okay? I won’t dare again. I really won’t.”
Gavin is covered in bruises. Robin isn’t much better. His lip is split. There’s a cut above his eye.
ľ
Robin straddles Gavin, breathing hard. “Who is Ms. Green?”
Gavin sniffles, snot bubbling from his nose. “Aeson’s mom.”
Robin’s voice is steady, even through the gasps for air. “From now on, Ms. Green is my mom. And don’t let me hear you say
another bad word about her.”
Gayin nods so fast I think his head might fall off. “I understand.

I stand there with my little fists clenched, my heart racing. I don’t know what I’m feeling. Anger? Jealousy? Something else I
can’t name?
The two kids swallow hard. Their faces are pale.
“We–we won’t dare to again.”
Only then does Robin stop. He slumps to the ground, chest heaving, looking pretty battered himself.
The commotion has brought teachers running. Several of them burst out of the building and stop dead in their tracks when they
see the scene.
Kids on the ground. Blood on faces. Robin sitting in the middle of it all, looking like he just won a war he wasn’t supposed to
survive.
Talia’s POV

Still no message from Robin about coming over.

I check the time. Then I check it again. Then I grab my bag.
I haven’t been going to the school to pick him up. Not since I ran into Aeson and Imema at the gate a few times. The driver handles drop–offs and pick–ups. Robin hasn’t complained about it once. He’s so considerate that it actually makes me feel guil
Somewhere along the way, without really noticing, I’ve star caring for Robin like he’s my own. It’s not the same as it wa with Aeson back then. I don’t give that kind of love anymore. The kind that expects something in return. The kind that hurt.
I pack a bag of homemade snacks. Cookies, mostly. The kind Robin likes. The kind with chocolate chips and a little too much
butter.
I’m just about to head out the door when my phone rings.

“Hello, are you Robin’s guardian?” A woman’s voice. Official. A little rushed. “There’s been a bit of an incident at school with Robin. Could you come here right away?”
My heart stops. Just for a second. Then it starts beating again, too fast.
“What kind of incident?” My voice comes out calmer than I feel.
“There’s been a physical altercation. Robin is okay, but you should come speak with us.”
