Chapter 220-2
Raymond’s POV
Off to the side, I watch the scene unfold. Jack kneels beside
Robin, adjusting the boy’s collar, whispering something that
makes Robin giggle. Their easy affection is striking. Natural.
Unforced.
My gaze flickers with a hint of complexity. Something I
cannot quite name stirs in my chest.
As if sensing my eyes on him, Jack glances my way. He gives
me a slight nod, nothing more than a small acknowledgment,
then turns back to fuss over Robin.
I do not nod back. I do not need to. The message is clear.
Jack knows. He has figured out who I am. And I have figured
out who he is.
Neither of us says a word about it. It is an unspoken
understanding, a silent truce between two men who recognize each other for what they are.

face relaxed, her posture easy.
Robin has mentioned Mr. Carter more than once before. I
assumed he was just an elderly doctor with remarkable skills.
Someone who knew herbs and remedies and how to heal
stubborn ailments.
It was not until our last encounter, when Jack stood in that
office and stared down Nick without flinching, that I realized
the truth. This old man is none other than the founder of
Carter Group. A titan of industry from a generation ago. A
man who built an empire and then walked away from it all.
Jack has kept a low profile for decades. Few people still
remember his face. Fewer still know his story.
I only recognized him by sheer coincidence. A photograph in
an old business archive. A name whispered in boardrooms
where old money gathers.
But what truly surprises me is that Talia has unknowingly befriended such a powerful figure. She has no idea who Jack
really is. To her, he is just a cranky old doctor with a soft heart
and a sharp tongue.
My eyes flicker as I think of something else. Talia’s childhood 2/5

friend, Bernard. His background does not seem ordinary
either. There is something about him, something beneath the surface that I cannot quite pinpoint.
And Electra? I have not found anything unusual about her
yet. But I am watching. I am always watching.
I observe Robin, Jack, and Electra standing beside Talia,
chatting and laughing. The four of them create a picture of easy camaraderie. My gaze is unreadable, my thoughts churning beneath a calm surface.
Talia is far from ordinary. That much is clear. And the people around her seem just as exceptional. Birds of a feather,
perhaps. Or maybe there is something about her that draws extraordinary people into her orbit.
A sharp, unwelcome voice cuts through the air, shattering the
moment.
“Raymond, you are the head of the Capaldi family, for crying out loud.” Nick stands a few feet away, his arms crossed, his face twisted with mockery. “If you needed someone to help
raise your kid, you could have easily found an heiress from
high society. Why settle for some uneducated nobody?”

He gestures broadly at Talia, at Electra, at Jack. “Look at her.
Her friends are either brainless muscleheads or old geezers. And you are letting them cheer for your son?” He snorts.
“Have you no shame?”
The laughter and chatter die on the spot.
Talia and the others turn to look at him. Their expressions are
not angry. They do not rise to the bait. Instead, they look at
Nick the way one might look at a pile of rotting garbage on
the sidewalk. Disgusted. But otherwise indifferent.
There was a time when Electra would have traded barbs
with Nick. She would have matched his insults with sharper
ones, his mockery with laughter. But now, she cannot even be
bothered. Engaging with him feels like lowering her IQ. Like arguing with a child who refuses to understand.
Electra glances at Talia. “Lena, the stench here is unbearable. Let us go inside.”
Talia, still holding Robin’s hand, smiles and nods. “Alright.”
Without sparing Nick another glance, they turn and walk
away.

I follow behind them, leaving Nick standing alone in the courtyard, his mouth open, his words unanswered. The silence he is left with is worse than any insult.
