Chapter 47
Aires‘ POV
I watch Imema carefully. Her words are precise, her tears are completely genuine… and yet, something about today feels different.
“I only wanted to help,” she whispers, voice trembling. “I saw Ms. Perseus and thought she might be looking for Aeson and you. I just wanted to bring her to you. Maybe I was too eager. I reached for her, and then… I’m not sure if she pushed me or if I fell. It all happened so fast.”
Nick jumps in immediately, loyal as ever. “Aires, Imema was only trying to help.

She never once accused Talia… not once.
Watch the video again. She never says Talia pushed her.”
He glances at Aeson, then back at me.
Aeson said it was Talia. When your own son says something, who’s going to doubt it? And let’s be honest–Talia’s history with Imema speaks for itself. If people assume the worst, that’s Talia’s own doing.”
Aeson’s head drops. “Dad, I’m sorry. I was
wrong.”
Imema reaches for my arm, her touch light, pleading. “Aires, please don’t be angry with Aeson. He’s just a child. If you need to blame someone, blame me. I

shouldn’t have approached her. I should
have known better.”
Aeson looks at her with an expression of pure adoration on his face. She’s taking the blame for him, shielding him like the kind soul that she is. Not like Talia, who always seems to do things that upset him.
I exhale slowly. My jaw relaxes, just slightly.
“This isn’t your fault, Imema. But you shouldn’t have chased after her. In any case, we can’t do anything about what has already happened. You should rest now, you have done enough today.”
She nods, settling back against her pillows

with a grateful smile.
My phone rings. My sister’s name flashes
on the screen.
“Aires.” Athena’s voice is sharp, urgent. “Mother’s out of her medicine. Talia
hasn’t delivered the refill. Her headaches
are back–bad. She hasn’t come downstairs all day. You need to get Talia to bring that medicine now.”
I frown. “What does Mother’s medicine
have to do with Talia?”
“For years, Aires. Years. Mother’s had those headaches forever… no doctor could touch them. Then a couple of years ago, Talia brought some medicine that actually

worked. Like magic. She’s been delivering it regularly ever since.”
A pause, and anger creeps into her tone. “It’s been three days past the usual delivery. Three days. Do you think she’s doing this on purpose? Holding it over us? I know she’s upset, but playing games with Mother’s health is inexcusable!”
The words land like stones in still water. Years?! She’s been doing this for years, and I never knew, never asked?
Damn, I never even noticed.
୮
“You said she’s been delivering it for two
years?”

“Yes! At least two. I’ve taken Mother to specialists all over the country–nothing worked. What kind of medicine is Talia giving her? Where did she even get it?”
I’m silent for a moment, processing. “What did Mother’s doctors say about it?”
“They checked it. Said it was fine. But Mother’s headaches are chronic–decades
old. She needs to keep taking it for a while before it’s completely cured.” Athena’s voice hardens again. “Talia knows this. She’s using it as leverage. I’m sure of it.”
“Understood. I’ll make sure she gets the medicine to Mother.”
“Good. Mother needs it now. She’s really:17

suffering.”
The line goes dead.
I stand there, phone in hand, the weight of new knowledge settling on my shoulders.
She’s been quietly treating my mother’s chronic condition for two years. Without thanks. Without recognition. Without me even knowing.
And now, when she’s been pushed past every limit, when she’s been publicly shamed and privately abandoned, when her own son called her a nanny and chose another woman–now, I’m supposed to demand she keep serving us.

I look at Imema, pale and beautiful in her hospital bed. At Aeson, confused and guilty. At Nick, smug and self–righteous.
Then I think of Talia, walking out with that strange child’s hand in hers… choosing him, and something uncomfortable twists in my chest.
I push it down. There’s no time for that now. Mother needs her medicine.
Talia’s POV
The nurse’s office is quiet, antiseptic. Robin sits on the edge of the examination table, his small legs dangling, while I clean the scrape on his arm. The wound

isn’t deep–children’s skin is dramatic, blooming red at the slightest provocation –but it still makes my chest ache.
“Does this hurt?” I dab gently at the edges.
He shakes his head, brave little soldier. “Miss. Jackson, it’s okay. It’s just a little scratch. Really.”
I continue working, focused, careful.
“Miss. Jackson?” His voice is soft,
tentative. “Aeson didn’t mean to hurt me.
He was just upset.”
I pause, looking at him. Such a strange child. So mature, so understanding

Nothing like-
“You don’t resent him?”
He shakes his head firmly. “He’s your son, Miss. Jackson. That makes him like
a brother to me. I don’t blame him. He
wasn’t trying to be mean. He was just scared you’d be taken away.”
A brother. The innocence of it nearly breaks something in me
I return to the wound, my voice quieter. “He wasn’t scared of losing his mother. He was scared of losing his nanny. There’s a difference.”
Robin is quiet for a moment. Then: “Miss.

Jackson, please don’t be mad at Aeson. He’s just confused. That bad woman in the hospital–she’s the one who caused all this.”
I stop. “Bad woman?”
He nods, serious as a little judge. “The one lying in the bed. She said mean things about you. That’s why I don’t like her.”
A warmth spreads through my chest. He’s too young to understand manipulation, too innocent to see through Imema’s performance. But he’s old enough to know loyalty. To know right from wrong in the simplest way.
I finish bandaging his arm and pull him6:17

into a gentle hug. “Thank you, sweetheart. You and your dad saved me today.”
The door opens. Raymond leans against the frame, arms crossed, watching us with an unreadable expression. “It was nothing. Though I have to ask… you and your husband. This cold war with Aeson. Doesn’t it bother you?”
I straighten, meeting his gaze. “You saw how they treat me. I’ve tried everything, Raymond. Nothing changes.” I pause, the words heavier than I expected. “Besides. I’ve already decided to divorce.”
