Chapter 114

The Lunar Café was relatively quiet at this hour. I claimed a corner
table and opened the file Vera had given me. It contained supplementary agreement documents for a partnership with Owen Wilson’s company–a small but growing firm that supplied rare
minerals essential for electronics manufacturing.
According to the notes, Owen had been avoiding finalizing the agreement for weeks. My job was to get his signature, no matter what.
“Fantastic,” I muttered, taking a sip of my coffee. “Send the Omega to deal with the difficult client. Classic Drake move.”
“Talking to yourself is the first sign of stress, you know.”
I looked up to find Allen standing beside my table, a warm smile on his face. He wore a tailored gray suit that accentuated his tall frame, his light brown hair neatly combed back.
“Allen,” I said, surprised. “What are you doing here?”
“Same as you, I imagine. Caffeine break.” He gestured to the empty

chair across from me. “Mind if I join you?”
I hesitated only briefly before nodding. Drake would lose his
goddamn mind if he knew I was sitting with another male wolf, especially one as attractive as Allen. The thought sent a small thrill
of defiance through me, hot and satisfying in my veins.
“How’s Susan doing?” I asked as he sat down. “Adjusting to Stone
Industries?”
Allen’s expression softened at the mention of his sister. “She’s over the moon. Can’t stop talking about how exciting it is. Though I think she spends more time talking about your boss than actual work.”
I forced a smile. “Mr. Stone tends to have that effect on new
employees.”
“I worry about her sometimes,” Allen admitted, stirring his coffee. “She’s always had everything handed to her. Our parents, our older brothers–everyone spoils her.”
“She has a lot of people who care about her,” I said, unable to keep a
hint of envy from
my
voice.
Allen studied me, his gaze thoughtful. “You say that like it’s a bad
thing.”

I shrugged, looking down at my coffee. “Not bad. Just different. She has a family safety net. She can afford to take risks because she
knows someone will catch her if she falls.”
“And you don’t have that?”
The question was gentle, but it hit a nerve. “When you don’t have people waiting to catch you, you learn not to fall,” I said simply. “You
learn to be brave in different ways.”
Allen nodded, seeming to understand what I wasn’t saying. His eyes fell on the file open in front of me. “Owen Wilson’s company?” he asked, reading the letterhead upside down.
“You know them?”
“Not personally, but I’ve heard of them. Small company, but they control access to some rare minerals. Huge growth potential.” Allen took a sip of his coffee. “Wilson has a reputation for being difficult,
though.”
“Great,” I sighed. “Just what I needed today.”
Allen glanced at his watch. “I should get going. I’m actually headed to
Stone Industries to pick up Susan for lunch.”
