Chapter 267
Kira’s POV
The drive back to our base felt longer than usual. My thoughts kept circling back to Rocco’s words at the coffee shop. He’d seemed different–tired, vulnerable, genuinely regretful. I couldn’t deny the way my heart had stuttered when he suggested giving us another chance. But was that just muscle memory? The ghost of feelings that once consumed me?
I pulled into the underground parking garage, surprised to see almost every space filled. Something was up. Usually, at this hour, most of the team would be out gathering intel or resting between missions.
“What the hell?‘ I muttered, maneuvering into one of the last available spots.
The elevator ride to our main operations floor only heightened my unease. My phone buzzed with a text from Andy: Everything okay? Briefing in progress. Come to the main room when you arrive.
The doors opened, and I was immediately struck by the unusual energy. People rushed between workstations, their faces tight with concentration. The normal hum of conversation had been replaced with urgent discussions and the rapid clicking of keyboards.
Rebecca stood at the center of it all, her fingers dancing across multiple holographic displays. Maps, data charts, and what looked like surveillance footage flickered across the screens. She didn’t even look up as I approached.
“What’s going on?” I asked, scanning the information too quickly to make sense of it.
Rebecca finally glanced at me, dark circles under her eyes suggesting she hadn’t slept. “Good, you’re back. We’ve been busy while you were having coffee.”
The slight edge in her voice wasn’t lost on me, but I let it slide. “I can see that. Did something happen?”
“We recovered more data from Ethan’s private server,” she explained, swiping to bring up two personnel files. “We knew Ethan and Lyra were part of The Triads, but now we have concrete identities for the other two core members.”
My stomach tightened. “Who?”
“Dr. Victor Mercer and Dr. Helena Shaw.” Rebecca expanded their files, revealing detailed profiles. “Mercer specializes in werewolf genetic modification. Shaw’s expertise is collective mind control.”
The images showed a stern–faced man with wire–rimmed glasses and a striking woman with silver–streaked black hair. Both wore lab coats and expressions of cold intelligence.
“Jesus,‘ I breathed, skimming their credentials. Both had impressive academic backgrounds before mysteriously disappearing from public research several years ago. “They know Ethan and Lyra failed?”
Rebecca nodded grimly. “According to communications we’ve intercepted, yes. And they’re not giving up.” She pulled up another screen filled with coded messages. “In fact, they appear to be accelerating something called ‘Phase Omega.”
My hands felt suddenly cold. “Phase Omega? What is that?”
room.
“Kira,” he said, relief evident in his voice. He looked as tired as Rebecca, but his eyes warmed when they met mine. “How did it go with
“Fine,” I answered automatically, then realized how dismissive that sounded. “I mean, it was… complicated. We can talk about it later. What’s happening here?”
