Sarah’s POV
The night was dark and moonless. Not a single star dotted the ink-black sky above.
I stood on the balcony, letting the cool ocean breeze tangle through my hair and flutter the hem of my dress….
The rhythmic crashing of waves in the distance provided a soothing backdrop to my troubled thoughts.
I couldn’t tell how long I’d been standing there, my mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions.
The gentle weight of a cardigan settling across my shoulders pulled me from my daze, followed by a familiar voice.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Nate’s gentle voice came from beside me.
“Standing out here so lightly dressed? You’re asking to catch a cold,” he added with genuine concern.
I blinked, coming back to reality, and turned to look at him.
Alpha Nate Santos stood tall beside me, his frame lean yet powerful.
Despite his youthful appearance, the alpha aura surrounding him was unmistakable.
“It’s summer. I hardly think I’ll catch a cold,” I replied, unable to hold back a small smile.
“Don’t be so sure. The temperature drops quickly by the water,” Nate said, his hazel eyes warm with concern. “The sea breeze can be deceiving.”
I couldn’t help but smile wider. “Thank you for the cardigan.””We’re past formalities, Sarah,” Nate reminded me. His expression shifted to something more serious as he asked, “is Aria asleep already?
“Yes, finally,” I answered, remembering how frightened my daughter had looked earlier.
The memory reignited the anger I felt toward Alexander for the first time since our paths had crossed again.
My precious cub had been terrified.
“Can we talk for a bit?” Nate asked gently.
The image of him after the car accident flashed through my mind, filling me with guilt. “I’m sorry, I’m not really in the mood to talk tonight. My emotions are all over the place.”
“Still thinking about Alexander?” he asked directly.
I remained silent, which made Nate chuckle softly. “It’s just Alpha Alexander Blackwood.
Taking him down shouldn’t be that difficult. Look at you-I’ve never seen you so defeated. It’s unlike you, Sarah.”
I bit my lip and looked up at him. “Nate, aren’t you angry at Alexander at all?”
“Why would I be?”
“He nearly ran you over with his car! If you hadn’t been driving such a sturdy vehicle, you might have been killed tonight.” My voice trembled slightly at the thought.
“But I’m alive, aren’t I? Without even a scratch.” Nate’s tone was dismissive.I stared at him, tears forming in my eyes. “How can you be so nonchalant about this?”
“Or is it because you know I care about him, so you’re letting it go? Not even asking for an apology?”
Nate blinked, studying my distressed expression with a small smirk. I felt my frustration mounting. “Nate, you’re an Alpha from a powerful Pack. Why are you letting yourself be disrespected like this?”
“Why are you always so kind to me, accommodating me without conditions? I feel like I owe you so much that I can never repay it.”
“Then spend a lifetime repaying me,” he said softly, his voice mingling with the sound of the waves, tender and mesmerizing.
I froze, caught off guard by his words. His eyes held a soft smile, crinkling at the corners.
“You know I can’t-”
“Who said anything about a mate bond?” Nate cut in smoothly. “I meant you could work for me for a lifetime. You don’t think I came here just for a vacation, do you?
But hearing Nate’s assessment, a strange sensation bloomed in my chest. Like someone who had been running through darkness suddenly glimpsing a ray of sunlight-a glimmer of hope.My heart finally felt a warmth it had been missing. “Really?”
“How… how can you tell?” I asked, barely daring to hope.
“It’s obvious,” Nate laughed. “Only someone as oblivious as you wouldn’t notice it. But that’s normal-those involved can’t see what’s clear to observers.”
He analyzed the situation for me. “Think about it. Why would Alpha Alexander crash into me for no reason? And why specifically when I invited you to get in my car and come back with me?”
“He can’t possibly be that bored, can he? It’s because he has feelings for you, so seeing us together made him jealous enough to do something that reckless.”
“When men get jealous, they can be terrifying. I’m a man too understand exactly what goes through a male’s mind, especially an Alpha’s. The possessiveness, the territorial instinct. Get it?”
The word “jealous” seemed to plant a seed in my heart, taking root and beginning to sprout. My lips curved into a small smile without me realizing it.
“Well, considering you gave me an actual analysis, I suppose I’ll believe you this once,” I conceded.
Nate laughed. “I’ve never met someone who acts so ungrateful after receiving good news.”
All my earlier unhappiness had evaporated, replaced by a secret joy bubbling inside me. “So if he’s angry with me, and tried to crash into you because he was jealous…
”
“Does that mean if I explain things clearly to him, let him know that we’re just colleagues and friends, he won’t be so impulsive in the future? And he won’t be upset with me or ignore me?”Nate nodded with an amused smile. “Now you’re getting it.”
“I’ve already tried to explain once,” I admitted, “but he didn’t believe me.”
“If once doesn’t work, try twice,” Nate suggested. “Or three times. Four times if needed. A wolf who’s found his mate can be stubborn, but persistence pays off.”
But I quickly realized the main problem. “How am I supposed to explain anything to him if he refuses to see me?”
As if on cue, my phone rang. Nate glanced at the caller ID displayed on my screen and smiled. “Well, looks like your opportunity just arrived.
