A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity had just fallen into my lap.
How could I possibly refuse?
The chance to care for Alexander, to be near him without his walls up— this was exactly what I’d been hoping for, though I hadn’t expected it to come in quite this form.
My heart raced at the thought of staying, of being alone with him in the house that was once our home.
Even without my wolf, the pull toward him remained undeniable—a constant ache that had never subsided in all these years apart.
“I’ll stay,” I said quietly, my voice steadier than I felt inside. “I’ll take care of him tonight.”
The universe had given me this chance, and I wasn’t about to waste it.
Perhaps in his vulnerable state, some part of him might recognize me-not as Sarah Winters, but as Summer, his Luna, his mate, his other half.
Without thinking, I led the way toward the main staircase. “We should get him to his bedroom. The master suite will be the most comfortable. for him.”
Jeremy’s footsteps faltered behind me. “Ms. Winters, have you been here before? You seem to know your way around surprisingly well.”
My heart skipped a beat. Stupid mistake. Five years and I still moved through this house like it was my own-because it had been.
“Oh, I-“I scrambled for an explanation. “Alexander mentioned the layout once during a chat. He’s quite… descriptive.” The lie felt bitter on my tongue, but Jeremy seemed to accept it.”I see. He must trust you a great deal. Alpha Blackwood rarely discusses personal matters.”
I didn’t respond, focusing instead on climbing the familiar stairs.
When we reached the master bedroom, I hesitated for just a moment before pushing open the heavy door.
The room had changed the furniture rearranged, the color scheme darker than I remembered. But the massive bed remained centered against the far wall, just as it had been when it was ours.
My fingers trailed down to his collar, where the missing buttons exposed his chest. I should have stopped there-should have maintained a professional distance. But my hands moved of their own accord, unbuttoning his shirt further to check for other injuries.
A familiar heat built low in my belly as I ran my fingers lightly across his skin, ostensibly checking for bruising but selfishly savoring this forbidden touch.
Alexander’s breathing changed subtly, becoming shallower. Before I could pull away, his hand shot up with lightning speed, capturing my wrist in an iron grip.
My eyes flew to his face to find his piercing blue eyes open and alert, staring directly into mine with an intensity that stole my breath.
In one fluid motion, too quick for human reflexes, he’d flipped our positions.
I found myself pinned beneath him on the massive bed, his powerful body caging mine, his face mere inches from my own.
“What are you doing here?” he growled, his voice rough with alcohol and something else-something primal that sent shivers down my spine.
