Chapter 148
“Trust me, Siren.”
He lets go of my hand and I step forward, my hands trembling. This feels like a humiliation ritual, no one told me about this. What’s the point of seeing if I’m a true Luna or not? I’m Kingston’s mate, we’re fated, not chosen, so that should be enough not so?
The silver casing is now open, and the gem floats, sparking whispers and murmurs among those present. I don’t fully touch it, my fingertips merely brush over the invisible magic orb that protects the gem, and I feel nothing. So I try again, eyes half closed with my heart beating so loud that I’m convinced everyone can hear it.
My hand slips between the gem, the texture warm like water. I touch the right side of the gem, trying to break a piece. I give it at least three tries before it finally breaks, getting a tiny piece that floats above the huge gem. People gasp as I turn to Kingston, he’s not shocked, he is staring at me with a huge smile on his face. But that is nothing compared to the pride in his eyes.
“Yes!” Luna Estelle screams. “I knew it, look at my baby!”
Relief floods me, I pull my hand away, and grab the gem with my right hand.
Elder Winston clears his throat, “Choose your mark, Luna. The pack’s heart offers itself to you.”
I don’t know what im supposed to do with it, but Kingston’s eyes drop to my right hand, and when I mirror his gaze he nods. “Into your skin.” He mouthes.
I press the gem into my skin, it’s a little painful at first, but it gets embedded inside. The wound closes right up, leaving only blood as proof of what happened. I stare at it in confusion, a dull ache pulsing beneath my skin.
A moment later, silver-blue light flares on my skin and then fades, leaving a delicate tattoo. A moon cradling a tiny star, and around it, ancient rune writing. It looks like a birthmark.
I hear Kingston groan, and when I turn to meet his gaze, I find him staring at his wrist. He smiles, the same mark appears on his wrist, identical to mine, and when he smooths his hand over it, mine flares, glowing.
“The heart has chosen,” Elder Winston announces. “We have a true Luna, the first Mooncrest has seen in over three hundred years. All hail the Luna.”
“All hail, true Luna.” Everyone repeats, the chants are not loud enough, but I’ll take it, I accept it all.
Kingston puts his hand put and I go to him, once again standing beside him. The final part of the ceremony comes, Alpha Dante comes forward with Luna Estelle, he is holding the symbol of rights and leadership.
Alpha Dante places a crown on Kingston’s head, it’s not made of jewels, it’s made of bones. Bones believed to have been removed from the bodies of our founding fathers, and fused together in harmony with five sharp points, and runes on each point.
Luna Estelle hugs me and places a diamond bracelet in my hands. “The Luna gets nothing,” she tells me. “But I wanted to give you this, it’s been in our family for years, I’ve found joy in how shiny it is.” She winks, “And I hope you find joy in it too, it’s yours to keep, or pass on.”
“Thank you.”I smile.
“Beautiful,” she says, stepping away from me.
Alpha Dante gives me a nod and walks away with his wife. It’s done. I don’t know how it can be both simple and complex, but I’m relieved and happy to be among those who lead the pack with eminence. The applause from the
