“Oh, no, that’s not…it’s not right.” He hisses, “Is that what he said?”
“He doesn’t need to, he won't admit it,” I sniff. “But he won't deny it either. I was such a fool, and you all knew about this, didn’t you?”
“Not everyone.” He grumbles, “I mean, he told me you were pregnant, and I did ask that he tell you before it got to this.”
My chest tightens, “So my Ellie knows?” I ask, the idea of her having known and not said anything almost sends me into a spiral.
“No, we umm..we don’t discuss you and Rowan’s..” he trails off, the rest of his words incoherent and unintelligible.
“Bond?” I sneer. “I bet you knew about that, too, didn’t you? And you let him fool me.”
He nods. “I knew some of it. Why don’t you sit down, and we can talk clearly?”
“I’m done talking,” I suck in a breath. “You’re oure both fucking assholes. You sent Aeliana to that damned place instead of keeping her here, and he…he manipulated the fucking bond, I didn’t know.” I choke out, “I felt so guilty about what we were doing, and it was natural? No, that’s not the word, it was never natural, it—”
“Noah, you need to breathe.” He reminds me.
“Did you know he was going to reject me?” I frown. I would have expected him to at least say soemthing even though we’re not close, we are civil enough to have a conversation. “But the second his perfect mate couldn’t give him an heir, he turned to me. To the stupid, oblivious girl.”
“You’re not stupid.”
“I am, I’m exactly that. I got involved with your fucking sidekick, and I got my best friend sent to a loon house.”
“You didn't get her sent there,” he sighs, his voice low and strained now. “Aeliana is where she needs to be right now. I know it hurts that she’s not here, and I miss her. Seeing her today wasn't enough, it just—”
“You saw her?” I gasp.
“Yeah,” he nods, swiping his nose. “I went to the institution, and we spent a few minutes together before she…umm went inside.”
I pause, unable to imagine what she must be going through in that place. That's the worst place you can send someone who has feared the very day they'd be sent away from everyone, and I played a part in that. I couldn’t even lie my way out because they all saw her, and if not for the video, I would have gone against everyone in defending her. It would be their word against ours, but there’s proof. “Is she okay?”
Kingston hesitates for a moment before he nods again, slow and unsure. “Yes.”
“Kingston, be honest with me,” I say, my voice pleading. “I’ve been lied to enough for one lifetime. Tell me the truth. How is she? I know she’s not okay in there, is she?”
“She will be.”
“That’s not good enough.”
