“Is that why you came back?” The girl asks. “Because you and your mate are not on good terms?”

I simply stare at her.

She seems pretty invested in my life, and for a moment, I start to think she might have been planted by someone out or in here to find out about my plans of potential escape. It’s so hard for me to trust her, but then I remember I’ve seen this girl around here quite a few times, her voice is what im a stranger to. Still, I remain cautious, and silent.

“I know what it's like,” she sighs, balancing her face in her hands. “I’ve been there, but no matter what happens, you have to fight.”

“Petra,” someone calls.

The girl, whose name must be Petra, looks over my shoulder while pointing at me. “Look, they found her.”

My gaze whips over my shoulder to a familiar face. The cleaning lady. She is friends with Mama Bird, and she gave us lights for the tunnels that Mama Bird snuck us through.

“You? What are you doing here?” the cleaning lady gasps. “Did they find Mama bird?”

“No, she umm…she left,” I swallow, jealous of her freedom now, but she earned it after a decade here. “I doubt they’ll find her.”

“And what happened to you?”

“My mate found me, and he brought me right back.”

“Oh dear,” her head shakes, pitifully staring at me. “That’s horrible.”

“You should talk to your mate,” Petra says, stealing my attention from the cleaning lady whose name I only know as Lock, but we aren't close enough for me to address her by something her friend did. “Whatever little disagreement you two are having can not compare to your child.”

“We don’t have kids.”

“Miss Jane,” my preppy calls from afar, jogging towards us with ointment and bandaid that I didn't ask for.

“Hi,” Miss Jane clears her throat. “I’m just saying hi to my favourite patient,” she smiles, moving past me to Petra. “And her new friend.”

“The bus will be leaving soon,” Evelyn tells her, sitting down beside me. “You will miss it, and cabs are very expensive.”

“You’re right,” Miss Jane nods. “See you next week, Petra.” She says, placing a kiss on her head, then her forehead. “Be good to your nurse, okay?”
