“Say you’re Aeliana,” he gulps. “Tell me who you are, baby, please.”

“I’m Aeliana?” I frown, still confused by their reactions.

“Aeliana?” Maddox rises from his seat, coming closer now. “Who is he?” He asks, pointing at Kingston with a trembling hand.

My gaze shufts between them again, both of them staring expectantly. “King?” I tell him, starting to sound unsure of myself now. “Why are you making me say his name?”

“It’s really you,” Kingston chokes out. “You’re back, baby. I missed you so much.” He sighs, pulling me into his arms.

“Stop,” I immediately push him away. It has taken me so long to learn how to exist without his constant affection and reassurance. “You always do this, you miss me, and then you leave me in that place again. I hate it, I hate you.” I snap. “Didn’t I ask you not to come back for me?”

“Evelyn, get the doctor,” Maddox says, his gaze wary now.

Doctor? James? “No, no,” I shake my head, moments from tonight flickering in through my mind. “I don’t want to see him,” I swallow. “He hurt me, he…”

“He’s not here,” Kingston softly says. “This is a different doctor, okay?”

“No doctors,” I swallow. A chill runs down my spine, and I feel it everywhere. It’s so bad that I have goosebumps now. “No one. Nothing.” I tell him, slapping my head to erase the sight of him naked between my legs while I was unconscious in bed.

Kingston gently grabs my arms and brings my fists down. “I’ll be right here,” he tells me. “No one is going to do anything to you.”

I want to believe him, I desperately do, but I’ve heard this before, it’s not something new. The promise is as old as time, and when I did need him, he wasn’t there. I was alone with that perverted bastard tonight, and if I tell anyone what he tried to do to me, they won’t believe me because he is qualified to stamp any and every label on me. “I don’t know how long I was out for, but you weren’t there when I needed you. I needed you tonight, but you weren’t there, you chose not to be there!”

“I know,” he nods. “And I’m sorry, but he will never hurt you again. He’ll never lay his filthy hands on you. You’ll never see him again.”

My eyes widen.

He knows? So Doctor James said something, but he probably made it look like I was at fault, because somehow lately everything is Aeliana’s fault. I haven’t done anything right, but I refuse to let him lie about this. “He touched me, I didn’t do anything.” I sob. “He is a liar.”

“I know, baby, I know.” Kingston nods, kissing both my hands. “Calm down, you need to rest, okay?”

Rest?

How will I ever close my eyes again, knowing that any moment, the very second in which Kingston turns his back, that man will be back again?
