Aeliana stays on top of me until she falls asleep, and when she does, I lay down with her on top of me still.

I’m half asleep when someone starts knocking on my door. The sound is distant, but it gets louder the more repetitive it gets. ” Alpha Kingston,” someone calls from outside, trying not to yell, but they’re loud still.

Aeliana stirs awake when I shift, laying her on the mattress. “What is it?”

“Nothing, go back to sleep.” I tell her, “I just need a glass of water.”

“Hurry.” She grumbles, her voice pregnant with sleep. I slip out of bed, and Aeliana turns to lie on her stomach. She’s trying to break the habit before she can’t do it anymore, but clearly, she’s struggling.

I slip my jeans on and head towards the door, opening it slowly so that it doesn’t make a sound. On the other end, I find Alex, one of my guards from the dungeon prisons.

“Alpha Kingston, I’m sorry to bother you, but I didn’t know what to do.” He says.

“What happened?” I frown. They don’t come looking specifically for me unless someone dies, or is actively dying. “Who is it?”

“It’s Warrior Cole,” he pauses, his eyes widening when he realises his mistake. Second mistake, because I made a public statement stripping Audrey of all her titles in this pack, the only thing I left her with is her name. “I mean, Miss Cole.” He corrects himself.

“Did she die?”

His mouth falls open. “No, but I think she’s about to.”

“Hmm,” I nod, “So if it’s not her death that you’re announcing, then why did you disturb my sleep?”

“She’s been throwing up for three days now, and she’s passed out twice already. I didn’t know what to do.”

I sigh, wondering if he has lost his mind. Alex is one of my brightest Zetas, and when he is on guard duty, everything moves especially smoothly below. “Let me get this straight, Alex. A prisoner throws up, and you come to wake me up?” I raise an eyebrow. “I’m trying very hard not to punch you right now, you almost woke my Luna.”

“Apologies,” his gaze falls. “But I didn’t know what to do with her.”

“So you keep saying,” I groan, massaging my temples. I could very well be holding my mate right now, but instead, I’m out here discussing the woman who hurt her. The very one who tried to tear us apart multiple times. “Will you come to me for every prisoner that throws up?”

“She’s been throwing up badly, Alpha. A lot, and just now too,” he says, his tone neutral. He isn’t worried, he is reporting “She keeps getting dragged out of her cell, so I wanted to know if I should call a doctor or do something since you gave no special instructions for her.”

“She’s probably trying to make you lower your guard so that she can exploit you and use the chance to get out

My resolve is strong, Alpha.” He clears his throat, straightening his spine. “And she truly is sick, the other guards can confirm. Especially Amy, she’s worked a double today.”

“I’ll come with you to the dungeon, but let’s get something straight here. The next time that you wake me because a prisoner who committed treason is throwing up, I’ll make sure you join them.”

“I apologise, Alpha Kingston. I promise it won’t happen again, I panicked. I didn’t know what to do,”

“And I hope you don’t bother the next time, Alex,” I warn, “Hurry on, lead the way. I need to get back before my wife starts to feel my absence.”

He leads me to the dungeon, and I follow closely behind him I shouldn’t be giving her the time of day It Achana finds out, she’s

going to be very upset, but Alex came all the way to my room so I must see what it is that she’s doing to fool them all. That, and I no longer feel sleepy. I see a very long day ahead of me, one with a potentially angry wife once I tell her where I went off in the middle of the night.

The dungeon cells are just as organised as any other prison out there, only more secure and designed for torture. Audrey and Seraphine were allocated to the lowest–level cells, the kind we reserve fortraitors, and well people like them. Seraphine might be getting out on her good merit, but while she is in here, she gets treated the same as every prisoner. She and Audrey didn’t share a cell because she requested not to, and while it was more fun to torture them both by sticking them together, Rowan talked me out of it.
